I want something that I can use for my photography as well as for when I light film sets which are continuous. I am pretttty sure that the "ambient" setting on this meter is for using continuous lights but can someone just clarify it for me please? Thank you

You'd probably want a cine meter instead.

Does your camera have a circular shutter?

My video camera? Not sure about the shutter, it is a Panasonic DVX 100

I was looking at the cine meter but they don't start until about $350 or so which is a little out of my range, I'll upgrade eventually but for now something cheaper would be nice. I have a sekonic studio delux my film teacher practically gave to me except it can be hard to get accurate readings because it is analog and sometimes hard to tell where the arrow is.

Funny. 3K worth of a camera and no spot meter.

Use the meter you have. A 1/3 of a stop difference doesn't affect anything.

It's not my camera but my high schools (we have 5 :)).

I'll just stick to the studio delux for now then. When I go to Brooks in a year I'll invest in a fancier one.

It has "cine shutter speeds" in ambient shutter priority, but not a cine mode.

Problem is I don't have the Sekonic L-358, it's the L-398 I have.

The L-308 can do both continuous light and flash measurements. What I don't know that it can do (without downloading the manual and reading it) is give you movie camera shutter speed values like the L-358. If you're really thinking about using a still camera with continuous light, that's easy with that meter. Just look at the manual to get the details of setting its mode(s).

Analog monster, but a nice meter overall.

I just took another look at my manual and the meter and realized that I had never calibrated it and it was a little bit off. That makes sense why all of my readings came out weird and it was saying there wasn't much light. Well thanks for all the help guys, I'm gonna stick with the old one for now.
