didn't know what i was missing until i got my 580EX II! the first pic was one of a few taken w/o flash outdoors, when i didn't see a need for one. the other 2 pics were all taken with my new flash which really helped fill up those shadows. my mistake to think that flash not necessary for daytime shooting! looks like i won't be leaving home without it from now on :p

quite happy with how subtle the flash was for indoor shots as well...

Flash is an awesome thing! When indoors, try bouncing off the ceiling or walls for a more diffused effect. Also may want to try omnibounce or lightsphere to help with diffusion as well.

yup i love it! only problem is that some shooting locations there is no nearby walls to bounce from, or the ceiling is too high or the walls are colored. but i was pleasantly surprised to find that if i keep a certain distance, direct flash can be quite subtle as well - only thing is that the flash reflection in the subject's eyes can be rather distracting.

id rather have the highlights in the eyes any day then just dead eyes. they add the sparkle to the eyes!!

My biggest deterrent from using straight flash is glare off the face because of oily skin or the like, similar to the last picture posted. That is reason enough for me to always bounce or diffuse whenever possible.

Just wait till you get it off camera, its all downhill from there!

yeah i noticed the glare effect too but sometimes there just don't seem to have any surface to bounce flash.

why would you say off-camera flash going downhill? i thot it would make it more versatile and give better results?

ie a subtle form of sarcasm used in jest. jest being a playful joking friendly manor of speech.:lol::lol:

flash is useful to have in the kit, very national geographic.

ah... i see... i was thinking more along the lines of a hotshoe-to-flash extension cord or bracket  that aint no off-camera flash, thats a damn personal studio! but he/she's right, its all downhill from there.. the bank account that is! thanks.
