Greetings,

I have been reading the LR threads trying to find info on this with no success. Maybe someone here can enlighten me.

When a RAW image is first being loaded in the LR loupe view it looks totally correct as far as exposure goes, by the time it finishes loading it is reverted to a zero'd out image with no adjustments.

I then try to get it back to the way it looked while it was loading, sometimes with little success.

Where are these 'perfect' previews coming from? How do I have LR retain these settings in the fully loaded image?

i haven't noticed that, but you should be able to adjust the image to get it VERY close if not the same as when it's loading. you're using the toolbar on the left, to adjust the image?

I could be wrong (Please correct me if I am), but that intial preview is the embedded JPG (with in-camera settings like contrast, sharpness, etc) applied. When it loads the RAW file, it gets rid of these and you see the FULL data.

Again, I could be wrong, but this is what I have been lead to believe is happening.

You should easily be able to get as good if not better than what you see if you work a bit with the RAW file. Turn the blacks up a tiny bit and saturation up a bit and that's pretty much what you see before the zero'd out version.

a good point, you loading RAW or something else in LR?

Well, I think it's just the 1st time you look at the photo, until it renders a preview. So while it's rendering a preview for the RAW, it uses the embedded JPG (with in-camera settings on). When it renders the RAW preview, it swaps out the JPG preview (with in-camera settings on) with the RAW preview.

what if there's no JPG on your CF card?

I think there is still a "JPG-like" preview built into the RAW file. Again, I could be very wrong, but this is what I've been lead to believe. It's this "JPG-like" preview that you preview on the back of your LCD too when you take your shots.
