View Full Version : Having some problems with RAW conversion

I took a few shots of my niece yesterday and imported them into LR. I did the basic edits I wanted and now I'm stuck.

First, there are a few presets I'd like to try on a photo just to see how it will look. What I want to do is apply the preset, then export it in a non-compressed form. This way I can go into CS3 and make further corrections. From there I'd like to finally convert to JPEG so I can compare one PP to another on the fly.

I see in LR I have a few options. I can choose the "Edit in PS" option. However, once in PS - I CANNOT save it as a JPEG. Only PSD, TIFF, RAW, etc.

Another option I saw was to export as a DNG. This stands for "Digital Negative", correct? Would this be the option I want? I noticed when I export as a DNG, I can then 'Save As' a JPEG in CS3. I'd also assume that a DNG file is like a raw file, meaning uncompressed, lossless data?

Any help is appreciated on how I can go about applying a preset, exporting it to a lossless format, and then finally from the lossless, going to JPEG.

Thanks!

Control, Shift, E for Export. Exporting is Converting in Lightroom speak. You can use TIFF, PSD, or PNG. JPEG is the only lossy conversion, as far as I know.

Going to a JPEG can be done straight in LR or you can do that in Photoshop as you would with any other RAW workflow. Applying the presets makes no lossy changes.

That said, I've been exporting as JPEGs all along simply because there's no difference to my or any of my clients' eyes thus far and it saves me a lot of time and space.

I believe the reason CS-3 isn't giving you the option to save as a JPEG is the file is 16bit rather then 8bit.

In LR go to Preferences and under External Editing change the bit depth from 16 to 8 bits. then you should be able to save as JPEG in CS-3

Or in CS-3 just got to Image-Mode and change it from 16 to 8.

Sweet deal! It worked! Thanks! However, I swore I tried that last night, and it DID export, however it exported the original, NOT the edited version. Either way, it works now - Thanks!

Good point! I'll make the changes when necessary. Thank you!

If you switch from 16bpc to 8bpc, you should also use another color space then ProPhotoRGB...
Link in the link from my sig explains more about the different color spaces and bit depths...
