Hi there; can anyone recommend a Firewire External Hard Drive; about 250GB upwards...
I'm looking that has a reliable feedback- one that is very reliable obviously lol- don't mind paying slightly more for reliability.
It doesn't need to be fancy; just something that I can manually backup photos on...
The Firewire is quite important as I find USB way to slow sometimes for large transfers
Thanks for any help

e-SATA is the way forward for massive data transfers (or even Gb ethernet), just bought a e-SATA enclosure and as long as you have SATA ports it works, if you don't it has USB 2. Works at the full 3Gb SATA spec if your mobo supports it. The case supports drives up to 750Gb.
If you really want Firewire (best use 800) then the WD External HDs are hard to beat.

I have a SmartDisk FireLite Firewire that i really like. I also have a bunch of LaCie Drives taht work beautifully with my mac...some threads here...people bash LaCie about having faulty or shoddy drives. My feeling is that maybe they had bad luck...i lucked out. In addition to those i have a Maxtor External which is real nice too.
I've heard good things about western digital too.
Hope this helps.

I got a 250 gb last Jan at the mac show in San Fransico for $219 . It has e-sata , firewire and USB2 plugs . Came with USB cable - they were out of firewire and e-sata cables - only one cable in box .
I would get one that has e-sata and firewire -
Mine is a Micronet , but I don't know who I bought it from .
Prices have come down since then . Make sure the case has a fan in it - my opinion - some people think it pulls in dust. But I prefer a cooler drive .

Hi I have a Formac 250Gb external hard drive. Its very fast even though its only Firewire 400. It doesn't have USB of any kind.I have all my photo's backed up onto it plus docs.
I have owned Formac equipment in the past and whilst it isn't always the cheapest in town it is reliable.
They also tend to put some thought into the design. Mines completely plug and play didn't need any drivers.

Try a Seagate FreeAgent. I've got 1.5 TB or more worth of Seagate internal and external drives and they're highly reliable.

I just bought a WD 750GB My book with FW400 and USB 2.0 interfaces for $230. It writes a lot faster than my 3 250gm Lacie USB 2.0 drives.

I would second that recomendation. Best drives.
Also, never compare speeds by manufacturers specs. SATA is burst rate, while SCSI and Firewire are throughput. 2 completely different ways of measuring speed.

Do what I do. Look at GEEKS.COM They have an incredible assortment of computer stuff and its CHEAP too.
I've got several externals:
2 2tb Lacies with 800 firewires. I use one to back the other up. (tired of burning CDs)
1tb MAXTOR, big and tough USB2.0
For taveling I take a 350GB external I made myself. I load what I shoot on it isntead of the laptop's internal drive. I also have a few others like that. Get a case and a drive and in 3 minutes you have an external drive.

I love living next to Frys. You can get a 500 GB Firewire 400/USB 2.0 external drive for $119 now. A 300GB is $89.
It's getting so cheap now that I'm thinking of building a RAID 5 box with 4-5 500GB HDD.
