Hi All

After a week with the filters, I wouldn't be without them!

Here are a couple more from my first 10 days of filter heaven!!

I got very wet feet taking these, a lot of running in, placing tripod, quick bit of bracketing and running out again!

Cheers

Mike

Cheers for all of your comments.

Here's another one from that night.

The filters I used were Lee ND grad, I used two, .9 and .6 giving about 5 stops difference. I can't remember who, but it was one of the members on this formum who said he uses a couple of filters at a time, I had a look at his work and it was great stuff.

Cheers again

#1 has distracting blown out sections. I would also have gone for either a faster shutter speed to freeze the motion of the waves. or slower to bur it much more. The in-between amount seems like it's the effect of camera shake.

#2 is nice but it's a little dark for me.

If there were one or two broken posts near each other I think that would have made for a more interesting composition.

What are those posts for anyway?

I see what you mean about #1, this is an area I will re visit many many times! I think a cloudy day would also suit it.

Post #7 has a slower shutter speed and also a split in the wood.

These are part of the old coastal defences.

Cheers for your comments

Well thanks for the reply so maybe I'll start colleting a few good filters.
I understand they are bit above the price range but thats what you pay for.
$$$ = Quality
$$ = OK

Great work. You inspire me to get my filters out and play with them.
Thanks for the post.

I like the both, but also prefer the 2nd shot....superb lighting and I like the all the elements that make up your composition.

Thanks for your comments. I think I'm addicted to filters, they make a huge difference.

I like your photo of Yosemite Julio, this is the type of picture I would love to take one day!

Here's another from the same area at low tide.

Love the shots! Where were these taken, if you don't mind me asking?

Hi Scott

They were taken down at Vazon Bay on the west coast of Guernsey. It is quite a large (by small island standards) sandy beach. The weather has turned now, and the tides will be good for some stormy shots later in the week. I'll post any decent stuff I get.

Cheers for the comments

The 2nd one is my favourite. The colours in the first look odd to me. I like the rework of the first one better.

wow thats amazing. maybe i skipped over when i was reading but what kind of filter is it? i see you had mention a .9 and a .2 but that does not make sense to me as to what they are. care to enlighten me??

also...what exactly are those things?

Do you mind if I ask what filter holder you are using, and do you notice any vignetting at 17mm? (I assume you were using your 17-40 f/4.0L)

Hi Geoff,

The filters were .9 and .6 Lee filters, got them from studiokitdirect.com the chap was very helpful. I had an idea of filters I wanted and he just said go for the kit .3-.6-.9 and thats what I used. the .9 and .6 for these.

I do get a bit of vignetting at 17mm, but sometimes it adds to the shot, sometimes not, Lightroom is good at getting rid of vignetting. I used the Lee filter holder too, you can build it so it holds up to three filters and a polarisor on top!

Cheers again

Nice shots! I need some filters.

They're both great.

IMO the first one could do to have been a longer exposure, then it would have been outstanding. I prefer the "concept" of number 1, but as someone else mentioned, the way it's caught the waves looks like camera shake.

I went back down there last night, 30 second exposure iso 640 @ f/6.3 trying to get some spooky night shots. Its quite grainy but I think this adds to the shot!

It's about a gale force 7-8 today, might not keep the camera steady

I love the effect of this last shot.

WOuld have preferred the nearest post closer to the corner, and a lower angle.

Well done on the shots , I do like the second and third posts. Cheers

Hi George,

Lower angle not possible here, I had to hold the tripod legs to stop it being washed away as it was (was a shoes and socks off night)

I've learnt that it is good to go back to a spot and re take shots at different times of the day/night, states of tide, and great fun too!

Thanks for the comments rob, I can't wait to get out there again tonight. Gale force winds predicted, so should be fun!!!

A lee filter. hmm i have no heard of that. is it a brand name or goes it something like a polarizer or does it just help enhance color??

Lee are a complete filter system they can be found at www.leefilters.com. The graduated neutral density filters I use do not alter colour, they are a bit like a pair of byfocal sunglasses, they can be used to bring the sky down to the same level as the land/sea and allow good exposure. Instead of the sky blown out or the land dark, with these filters, you can expose as the eye sees, so what you see with the naked eye is what you get!

Of course you can mess around and darken the sky further etc.

There are some very good filter threads on this forum.
