Hi, so i just received my Canon i9900 in the mail! I'm SO excited. I already plugged it all in and everything, and installed the drivers. I can't wait to play with it later tonight (have some things to take care of first.) Anyways, so i was wondering is there anything i need to know/do before i go print crazy on it? i printed out a test print without setting anything really (plugging it in, installing drivers, setting to photopaper, and hitting print) and it looks AMAZING! What is this about icc profiles or whatever, that i've read. Do i need to deal with those? Anyhelp would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

If you are printing from PSCS or PSE2, in the PS printer dialog set Print Space to Printer Color Management, and in the i9900 printer driver dialog, just set the paper type and paper size. This gives you a neutral starting point. These settings may give you all you need for the majority of your printing.

When you get more experienced with the printer, and/or want to expand into different papers and results, get into ICC profiles and other color management then. If you try to start off with all the chicanries of color management in the begining, you will likely get into one helluva mess - fast!.

I'll be doing the majority of my printing through PS7. Is there a place to set the printer space in ps7? i would assume so but i'm not sure where to find it.

Under the File menu, run down and click on Print with Preview.

When the Print dialog box opens, check Show More Options.

In the first pull down box, select Color Management.

In Source Space, select the Document radio button.

In the Print Space section in the Profile pull down menu, select Printer Color Management.

That will mean that the selections for paper, etc. you make in the i9900 printer driver dialog will be your print settings. Don't be confused by the other options under Print Space: Profile.

With your first print outs, don't look to see if they are the same as on your monitor, just whether the prints look good. If your monitor is not colorimeter calibrated, it will be difficult to get the prints to be similar to what you see on the monitor. Your first objective is to see unadulterated prints, preferrably from photos you know are good and haven't been processed much in PS. Direct, untreated images printed on Canon paper with the appropriate i9900 settings usually tell the truth.

If the prints are good and the monitor looks quite different, you know you will need to take a long look at whether your monitor is up to snuff, your graphic card gives you good 2D and if it's about time you take a look at monitor calibration with something like a Colorvision Spyder.

It's best to keep things simple in the beginning without getting your head full of color management. Then, by process of elimination, sort out your system piece by piece as you learn and see more.

great, thanks! I really appreciate the step by step break down. It really helped. Time to go print crazy! haha.
