I can't seem to get decent lighting for these types of shots. I've read that it's best to shoot them when the sun is low so they are catching the light from the side. Anyway, here's what I mean about not getting the light.

Red-tailed Hawk.

Try turning the exposure compensation up to +1 or even as high as +2. You may lose the sky but gain detail in the bird. It's all about comprimises and what information you want to capture.

You may want to shoot at a angle rather than Straight up and behind. But there are still issues to catching light.

Striaght up and behind is all I could get from those. Unfortunately they usually just circle a couple of times, then move on.

In that Case Blowing the sky, overexposing to get detail or Flash Fill is needed. You need to get a postion where you can see them coming.

Ok, cool. I'll try overexposing next time. Thanks!

Later in the day when the sun is lower. Your Exif says 12:09, mine was 5:23.

Biggest problem is you need to use evaluative meter and +1 to +1 2/3 Exposure compensation (when against bright sky), you need the light behind you and the bird coming at you at a angle and you need to use fill flash.
