Upgraded from 3.2 to 4.X? then found out that that version didn't like the S20 or S10. Upgraded to 4.6.0.32 today but still can't download from camera.

Same problem: cannot detect camera...

A day on and I've yet to find a solution.

The sort feature in in Image Library 1 in the new ZB doesn't work seem to work either! It appears random even when I select sort by date.

Is this the proper place for my question, or is there another forum entirely that I should be looking at?

Is there perhaps another programme I should be using instead of the ZB?

Any ideas?

Thanks a million,

Ed

Does the camera show up in your Device Manager? Can you download using another program (like Microsoft Scanner & Camera Wizard)? Is the camera plugged into a rear USB port? What other devices do you have connected to your computer?

Johnny E,

Thanks for the interest.

The camera as such does not show up on the Device Manager. The drivers listed for the USB ports all seem to be working properly.

The camera is the only thing connected to the computer.

To give you a history of my problem, I had ZB 3.2 which seemed to be working fine, but suddenly it would not detect the camera. I thought it might be a good idea to update to a later version and found 4.0 on the Canon site. Of course it does not support the S20, something I found out when downloading the latest version which fixes that problem.

Another funny thing about the latest ZB is that it cannot seem to sort my photographs! The display is more or less random even when I try to sort by date. Bit annoying, that!

Thanks.

Ed

If your camera doesn't even show up in Device Manager, you may possibly have a ghost in your machine. What I mean by that is that a "ghost" device may be present in your Device Manager that you can't see unless you reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

Make sure your camera is NOT connected, and the next time you reboot your computer, hold down your CTRL key. This will allow you to select Safe Mode. When your PC is running in Safe Mode, with your camera NOT connected, go into the Device Manager and see if your camera or another device shows up in the Imaging Devices or Other Devices categories. Nothing should be listed in either category (actually, neither category should even be listed). If there are devices listed, remove them by clicking on them to highlight then clicking on the Remove button below. Once they're all removed, reboot your computer normally, and try connecting your camera.

As for the sorting thing in ZB ver. 4.6, did you run the 'dbconverter.exe' file (located in C:\Program Files\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX\Program folder)? I'm not sure if that will help, but that may do it. If not, I'd probably try uninstalling ZB and running the ZB 4.6 updater again.

Please let me know how it goes.

PS: Can you tell I do tech support for a living?

JohnnyE,

Thanks a million for the help. A more computer literate (read IT professional), friend visited today and was able to sort things out following your advice and a few tricks of his own. It took some doing and a fair amount of time, but I'm back in business!

Thanks,

Ed
