Just started shooting in Raw.....

When I upload the pictures on to the computer they are very small.....

Why is this?

Is there a way to convert the image to a larger size?

Or have I got the settings wrong?

I have shot in L/jpeg previously and was under the impression that the RAW image was a larger file..... but for some reason this doesn't seem to be the case with me..... am I doing something wrong? any suggestions are welcome....

I have a canon 1d and the mode is set to RAW only if thats of any help....
Thanks in advance for anybody's advice....

When you say the pictures are "very small", are you referring to the size in pixels they display, or the file size in megabytes? Have you run the images throiugh the raw converter? If you haven't, and are just referring to what you see in Zoom Browser, you're only seeing a preview. If you have run the converter, check what the output settings are for the images.

Do I have a RAW converter as part of Photoshop 7.0..... or does it come with the canon software..... I'm certain I have converted anything.... how do I do this????

I think you are right and I'm very likely to be looking at a preview as the image is very much like a large thumb nail..... please help......

You convert all of your RAW images using the Canon software ZoomBrowser. I personally don't like this and use either C1 or Breeze Browser. After post processing you will have the larger files that you are looking for.

I believe there was an addon for PS 7.x to allow you to convert your RAW images there. Sounds to me you probably don't have that.

Yes.. you are looking at the preview thumbnail..

Fire up you Canon "File Veiwer Utility" or "ZoomBrowser" that came with your Rebel or 10D... and use that to view the whole RAW file.

You also use it to convert the files to TIFF or jpeg as you see fit.. (if you are working with RAW I suggest DEFINATELY convert to TIFF... you can make jpegs to upload and stuff later.

PS7 Does NOT have native RAW support... so the method would be to use the Canon utilities mentioned abve to convert the RAW file to TIFF.. and then work on the tiff in PS7.

You may also want to try out "Breezebrowser"

I find it is the easiest and most intuitive tool to use for both browsing and then converting all in one package. There are better converters.. but for ease of use.. it is a great place to start. I think the Demo is free for 30 days...

But Zoombrower/File viewer utility... that came free with the Camera is also fine... it is just a little more "clunky" :)

Ok I have canon ImageBrowser and am running a mac g4......

When my 1d is connected to the computer and I download all the images to the computer I am now not getting anything from the camera....

It says that it is preparing to down load and then the egg timer bar goes across but when the computer has finished the task and opens the file I have selected no files appear in the folder..... does anybody know why this is?????

If I insert the card directly into my computer using a card adapter the files come across but they are 216kb is this the RAW file? Is this the file that I have to convert???

Also where do I download Zoombrowser from.... as I don't believe I got a version with my 1d......

Is ImageBrowser the same as ZoomBrowser????

Help me before I go mad and pull all my hair out..... Thanks in advance

If you are using OS X try opening "Image Capture" from the applications folder and set that to automatically open when you insert your card (I recommend always using the card reader).

now you can tell this application to download the images to a flolder on your HD somewhere. this is how I always download my pics from my 300D amd it works with RAW also.

open the preferences menu of image Capture to set it to open whenever you put the card in.

good luck

O-kay.. I did not realize it was the 1D...

The 1D raw files are called.. oddly "tif"... With the 1D there is not two files.. (10D and Rebel use a system with two files)

The MAC part of things.. I am afraid I can not help you with...

What type of file extension are you getting? Is it a tiff?

The files should be about 4 megabytes or more.. tifs.. but indeed the view will be a preview thumbnail untill it is converted.

God how you go around the houses some times when it really is the simplest of things..... I have assertained that the problem was that the image capture seemed to be grabing the images before the Image Browser could get hold of them.... when I changed the preferences to the capture & told them not to grab them then they uploaded straight into the Image Browser and hey presto I had MASSIVE images that were very very sharp.....

Thank you all for your help..... I'm off to gule some of this hair back on now..... as much as I love photography the technical side can drive you to utter despair in the matter of an hour!!!!!
