I've been away for a while. Spinal surgery tends to throw a giant sized spanner in your motorsport calendar but never mind, things are getting better.

Three little pictures from the British F3 and GT meeting at Silverstone last weekend. First motorsport snaps with the 1D Mark III.

#1 I have to start with something from Maranello

#2 Here's the required "duck" shot as is traditional with a new camera.

#3 and here's the F3 part of the deal

All shot with the Sigma 500mm since my physio won't let me out with the 600mm yet (boo-hiss) ;)

Many more here... http://www.racepicsuk.com/c1347135.html. Thanks for looking!

I'll sort some more out later.

Spinal surgery - eek...

Hope you're fixed...

You haven't lost your touch... Nice shots.

I suppose we will all have to start behaving again!

Seems you haven't lost your touch matey, bang on as ever. Nice and vibrant and the detail even in "reduced for forum" size is fantastic. I assume you are happy with the Mk3... I've not really looked into it much but most of what I've heard has been pretty negative - issues with front focusing?

What's that?..New lens from Canon or something? :)

Welcome back Glenn. Must be terrible having that big white 600 sitting in a corner shouting "use me, use me"... :D

Glad you're recovering Glenn! I've injured myself enough recently to know it's very nice to get back to doing what you love ... in my case stupid things that are likely to cause further injury!

You going to be at Combe August Bank Holiday for a catch up (nearly a year!) or are you at the Gold Cup? I'm actually planning to attend Combe for the first time this year, would be good to see you and some of the other regulars in the Westway Crew!

Tschüß!

Ouch, good luck with the spine. On the plus side some great shots, colours looks good (tho this new monitor isnt calibrated well at all :( ).

Thanks to all for their comments :)

Hope you're fixed...

Some way to go yet but things are improving :)

Member of the lumbar discectomy club now?

Yup, L5 plus a couple of spinal injections and one into the sciatic nerve root when the discectomy didn't work.

I'm planning to be at Oulton for the Gold Cup. If my physio throws her toys out of the pram and bans three days camping I might end up at Combe though. It would be nice to catch up.

Mmm... I've heard those rumours too.

I have yet to persuade the Mark III to miss focus either in static focus tests or action sequences. I've done two shoots with it. The first was a canoeing event in Wales were I used it plus the Mark II half and half. After a little fiddling with the AF settings the Mark III nailed every one of the 700+ shots I took with it (outperforming the Mark II). That was mainly AI Servo in high speed sequence mode (tuned down to 8fps because I can single shot at that speed if need to).

On Sunday at Silverstone the focus accuracy was again faultless (this time all AI Servo and single shot). There were a number of blurry shots but that was down to failures in my technique not the camera - I haven't shot motorsport for nearly four months so I am a little rusty. In terms of AF the camera was easily better than the Mark II would have been - it got a number of shots that the Mark II simply wouldn't have managed.

So far I have only used the camera with my 50/1.4, 135/2, 70-200/2.8, 120-300/2.8 and 500mm. I haven't tried it with the other lenses yet. I haven't had the requirement to micro-adjust focus for any of them since they have all been perfect so far.

Yes, I am very happy with the Mark III. A definite upgrade from the II :)

Woahh fantastic shots, and glad you're ok!

I'm just dying to test my 1d3 in motorsports. Now I have a car, I should be able to make it to a Brands Hatch meeting - but picking the right one could be a challenge (I'm not exactly rich right now)

Glenn, Excellent images, you have really showed with these shots what the MKIII is capable of, lovely clean and colourful images.

Cheers

He's the chap whose 24L and 135L are living in your house at the moment... I am sure if you think hard enough you'll remember!

Dunno when I'll be back at Brands... I might get over there for the SEMSEC meeting on the 8th. Nothing exotic there, just club stuff but I kinda miss Brands. My first definite date is probably the truck meeting in November.
