the Canon Powershot Pro 1. Any thoughts? Any users?
I'm looking at a little flier I've got for the Pro 1 and it states it has 8.3 mega pixels while the 10D states 6.3.
The Pro1 is priced at 999.00 while the 10D is at 1399.00.
Can anyone tell me why?
I feel like I've never picked up a camera before when I'm trying to figure out the digital world! I'm not sure I like it! LOL Guess there is a certain comfort in tradition.
Anyone?

Well, the powershot is a fixed lens camera - 1 lens, thats all it can ever have.
The 10D is an Interchangable Lens SLR camera... which means you can use any of the assorted Canon EF lenses.... Wide angle, macro, zoom, super zoom, fisheye... whatever you want.
People have talked about a 8mp camera actually collecting less light than a 6mp, being as the sensors are packed closer together and detect fewer photons of light, but I can't speak much to that.

The Powershot Pro 1 is a compact digital camera (a "digicam"), while the EOS 10D is a digital SLR.
Don't be fooled by the megapixel count. It is NOT the only and not even the most important feature that determines the quality of the camera or the images you can make with it.
The major difference between the Pro 1 and the 10D is that the Pro 1 has a very small sensor, while the 10D has a relatively large one. There are all kinds of reasons why you'd want to have a camera with a large sensor (higher image quality, less noise, useable higher ISO settings).
Have a look at Digicams vs. DSLRs (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/digicams-vs-dslrs.shtml) for some more info on the difference between digicams and DSLR cameras.

WARNING! WARNING!
This is a BIG difference ... as for the Pro1 ... you buy it, you're ready to shoot. Accessories will be simple stuff such as memory cards, flash, camera bag ... usual camera stuff if you want/need it.
The 10D ... $1399 is just the beginning. You'll still want/need the above stuff but you'll also NEED to buy lenses to get the most out of it. I have a few lenses for my 10D but the cost of those are considerably more than the cost of the 10D (and I paid more than $1399) BUT, what one can do with the 10D and the variety of lenses that are available is a lot more than the Pro1 will ever do.
Make your choice and hope to see you in a "L"caholics meeting sometime ...
PS ... not everyone needs a digital SLR, in fact most people don't. It's mostly what you want to do with your photography, and how much you like eating mac and cheese when all your money goes into your dSLR addiction

with the 10D? The whole pixel thing throws me. It's kind of crazy and I'm having a hard time adjusting to thinking of pixels rather than film format.

What lenses are they?
if they are Canon EF lenses, they will work fine.

If it's a Canon EF lens, yes!
The pixel thing ... don't let it get to you. Just think of it as 'invisable' film. Chances are you never saw your film before you got the negatives back ... same goes for digital only it's not light sensitive once it's been recorded
Oh, and pixels are a lot easier to work with than film or negatives. There are some very easy programs out there to edit a digital photo IF you even want to (not always needed)
I take it you are new to digital? :? It's fairly simple. Speaking for myself, it opens a whole new world of photography in which I don't have to be as careful with my composition and can experiment a LOT more ... thus, much better final results.

And it is still noiser at ISO 50 than the 10D at ISO 200 ;)

Yup.
The Pro1 is supposed to be slightly noisier than the G3.
And my 300D (same same noise as 10D) has about the same noise at ISO400 as my G3 at ISO50.
