View Full Version : D30 woes

Can anyone help? I have on several occasions shot in RAW format on the D30 to get home and find at least 1/2 the pics are in JPEG form! Without changing the setting, the camera has saved them in JPEG!
Also, I have been experiencing spots on some prints. After cleaning the sensor (per manual) they go away, but too many times for me. (yes, I'm careful... but I do switch lenses a lot)
And finally... My IBM microdrive went bad and was replaced. My brother in law had his fail too. Is this a common occurrance?
Thank you all in advance for the great advice!!!!!!

Jerry,
WRT format: have you been using the D30 in any of the automatic/easy shooting modes? Raw format cannot be used (don't ask me why), the camera defaults back to L/F JPG. PITA, if you ask me, can't see why Canon should force you to do this.
WRT cleaning: you might try SensorSwabs and Eclipse solution. Not sure where it's available in the US. I have to get mine mailorder from Germany. It's not per manual, but it does work and I've seen quite a few other recommendations from Canon owners for them. Perhaps, it's just dusty where you live and shoot. I don't know that there's any "acceptable" level of dust.
WRT microdrives: Sod's law! Every time someone posts a message like this about MD's, you always get a few people who say they're trouble, and loads (like me :D ) who've had no problem. All of which is no help to you. It's handy to have the 1gig capacity and they are much cheaper than the 512+ mb cards.
Regards,
Pekka

Are you sure that you haven't assigned image quality change to thumb dial?

I have two 1GB microdrives and no problems so far (knock knock).

Ditto here 2 1 GB drives and never lost a picture.
And I see now you can get then for around $250 with a 50 rebate :-)
I may just have to buy another. D60 at RAW = 138 files on a 1 GB drive.

Hey mrchips!
Where did you see the $250 microdrive deal? That plus a $50 rebate would really tempt me to by a backup!
Thanks for the info!

Thanks to all who replied.....
Yes, I have been using the sports mode and portrait when I need to get ready quickly for certain shots. That explains the JPEGS when I thought I was shooting RAW. Live and Learn.
I've only had the one problem with my microdrive, but being my only card bigger than 16mb, to part with it for 2 weeks hurt! My brother in law dropped his microdrive about 2 feet onto a desk... I think that's what hurt it.
As for the dust spots, I have them in two spots on about 200 pictures. Some I can get out with PS, some not.
Roger Cavanagh... you are a great help and a fine person. I appreciate your input!
