I purchased my Canon 580EX II Speedlight early to mid-May when it was released in the USA. Last weekend when shooting a wedding, I noticed that the Speedlight was wobbly and wasn't tight on my camera anymore.

By the end of the wedding, I had to hold onto the flash for dear life because it was bouncing all around. Looks like something inside cracked (no banging, dropping or whatnot occured that I know of.) and is causing those spring shocks inside the locking mechanism to be worthless!

Anyone else have this issue? It is obviously under warranty and am sending it to NJs Canon repair center tomorrow to get it fixed up.

Thank goodness for backup equipment!

didn't know there was any different in the mounts, are they visually different? Can you post a photo so we can compare the different mounts?

I shot with mine at a 100 mile mountain bike race lasting about 7 hours and the awards beer bust back in June. No problems everything is tight.

does it still have the same screw/turn dial attachment for tightening it to the hot-shoe adapter/slot?

my flash comes loose and shifts causing the flash to give a full burst overexposing my images. I have ordered two new off shoe cords to see if its the hot shoe or the flash.

i can't find any pics of the new slide on model, i can only find pics of the 580 EX II with the old screw type mount http://www.canon.com.au/images/big_products/580ex%20angle%20%2B%20stand.jpg
not that it reallys matters though i guess, it sounds as if you must have a dud with too much movement in the joint area.

That's not the new 580EX II. That's the original 580EX.

The original 580EX mounts via a round screw down mechanism similar to how on-camera battery packs fit.

The new revision has a slider which locks and seals the hot shoe to the camera's mount. It is similar in design to Nikons flash units.

I have no idea how in the world this happened to my flash but it is good to know that others don't have issues with it.

I unscrewed the 4 screws at the bottom to take a look and I found a crack in the plastic on this toilet bowl looking piece which has something to do with the tension of the hot shoe locking mechanism so that is why it isn't staying on. Off to Canon for serivce repair tomorrow
