View Full Version : Verbose signatures

My pet peeve is long signatures. Like the ones where people list half a dozen oh-so-clever quotes, or list every item of gear them own - with a separate line for each item.

I want to read what people have to say. I don't want half the screen to be signature clutter.

Is it not possible to enforce a limit of, say, 4 or 5 lines in the signature block via the vBulletin software?

If not, is there any realistic way of encouraging people to be more concise?

Some might think your sig line is too long even.

I think less is more, but my sig line fluctuates as my mood does.

Yes, there is a limit of 4 lines, I think.

As people update their signatures, they have to get them within guidelines.

I agree though that some people have an essay in their sigs that is longer than many of their posts.

At least we don't have images in them, like this one for instance:

try and find the actual thread in there amongst all that crap.

And I truly agree. I think mine is about right, but some may think it's too short. All that being said, it's highly subjective, isn't it? How about just not reading the ones you think are too long?

Edit: P.s., I didn't read yours. (meaning the OP's)

Yours may be short (Ooh er...), but it still takes up 12 lines of MY screen! ;):lol:

Just like this ^^ :)

Exactly. And that makes the most important point of all. Too long, too short, too subjective. If you like 'em, read 'em. If you don't... don't. It takes far more energy to complain about them that to simply pass them by.

There are restrictions imposed by the software such as max 5 "lines". Problem is vbulleting has a strange way of calulating number of lines.

Also the rules state

User signature should go into the dedicated signature box and NOT in the actual post. Signature must not contain large fonts or distractive elements.

One thing you can do if you don't want to see signatures is to turn them off in USERCP options.

Why not just turn them of in user CP???

Of course then you would be controlling what you choose to see instead of controlling what they choose to write ;-)

Because some people actually have something useful in their signatures other than rambling babble about every type of tripod, cable release and type of rechargable battery they possess. Links to galleries, for example that can be browsed for inspiration or links to useful info or tutorials such as Rene's link about color management, etc.

I agree here as well. I get a kick out of the signature lines that list absolutely everything down to the different types of CF cards they have individually. Perhaps it is an attempt to have a long looking gear list.

I really prefer that people put their gear in the gear list thread and then link to their specific post from within that. I do refer to that from posters that use it when I am interested in something about them.

It does seem that the signature line has now become a way of linking to things that a poster may have in buy or sell.

I do prefer shorter signature lines and those that have longer ones I tend to ignore or not read at all.

When I had my "first run" in photography, from about 1970 to about 1978, the photo magazines would list the technique with the shot. Because that is what I got used to I have often thought a "Gear List" was non-sensical. Without going into the EXIF data, there is no telling what particular piece of equipment and an what settings created the OP's shot.

It has always made more sense to post the gear and technique WITH the shot. For example, something like:

5D
135mm (Canon 70-200 f4)
1/500th sec
f8
400 ISO

I personally just wish users would post there equipment in there signature line (& maybe there name). This way when they ask the typical question ex. what lens should I get, we know what they have so far!
However on a positive side, the signatures here are much better in general compared to the ones at Dpreview :)
