I just stopped by my local Wolf camera or Ritz camera and they can order the 50mm 1.8 lens for 69.99. This means if your sales tax is less than shipping from many of these internet sites you might as well go over there.

Geez, the local camera shop here in Murfreesboro wanted almost $100 for one! I just ordered mine from B&H, but I forgot to check at Wolf Camera (possibly even the same one you went to! )

Personally, I think that store is a joke (not very extensive experience with them though). I bought my 50mm f/1.8 from Calumet... better price, and better service. And they know what they sell too. I asked a sales woman at Ritz to show me some neutral density filters and she had to get her manager :?

I went to my local Kits Camera to buy the 50mm f/1.8. They said they didn't have it in stock because it was a specialty lens. She said she could order it for me though. No thanks. I can order it myself.

It's a sad truth but i rarely go out shopping anymore. I recently discovered i pay $8 more for my guitar strings at my local shop then i need to online...

LOL! My local Wolf camera said similar. I asked them if they had any Canon lenses, and the guy said that they "don't stock that high-end stuff".

Being close to Atlanta, I sometimes order from KEH. I ordered my 85 on Monday morning, and had it at my front door yesterday at 3 pm via standard UPS ground. That's pretty fast.

Hahahaha! I'm smiling, but out of embarrassment! I work at a Ritz Ultra (flagship store) in downtown San Francisco, CA, USA. I'm sorry ya'll had such bad experiences from folks at ritz/wolf, but please believe we're striving to provide better service to you through revamped employee training programs. We pride ourselves on being "Real Camera People," but sadly most of you have missed out. I can only really speak for my store, but except for an old lady that works the photo counter, we all have 5+ year in photography, and an extensive knowledge of Film SLRs, and their digital counterparts. I hope some of you can come to my store, and give me a chance to redeem myself and maybe elevate my employers reputation for quality service in photographic equipment. Wow! I'm still in shock! Come visit me in SF!

I actually bought my DRebel from a Wolf Camera store in Nashville, along with a few smaller items. :) I have no complaints, in fact the fellow who assisted me was incredibly friendly and seemed to know his stuff. The only reason I don't go there more often is because it is about 30-35 miles away. :) I try to go back whenever I happen to be in downtown Nashville.

In my area, if I go to a Wolf or Ritz Ultra, then I have about a 1/3 chance of finding a retail person who knows what he is talking about. Then the ordinary Ritz stores are even worse.

In terms of price difference, I am looking for a 17-40mm f/4 L and B&H's price is $650 while Wolf/Ritz has the same lens for $799.

Why do people like that 17-40mm lens. I know it is an L lens but what exactly do you use it to shoot?

Remember that on a camera with a 1.6 crop factor such as the 10D or the Drebel, the lens is equivalent to about a 27-64mm zoom, which is a pretty useful range for everyday wide to normal shooting. I think it is for this reason that the lens has become quite popular with the DSLR crowd.

It's why canon made it ;-)

For the 1.6x crop factor, it is the only affordable L lens for a "wide" angle. I guess that many people won't need 17mm in full frame.

I can vouch for Big Dave, here. The Ritz Ultra store in downtown SF (right by the cable car turntable) is one of the places I hit when I have to have something right now. All of the brick-and-mortar stores in San Francisco have pretty much the same prices, and the folks at that Ritz usually know their stuff. Now, if only they were able to extend that to the rest of their stores, they would be a first-rate chain. Not a Calumet, mind you, but then who goes to Ritz to buy a Hasselblad?

i went to my wolf ultra here in plano and they been pretty nice
i even got the worng part today and the mang called the warehouse and another store to see if the had the part. He found out that the store up north of us had it and i went up there to get it.

i've never really had a prob with them but they are just a bit high on prices
like the 75-300 canon USM III is 269 at wolf and 159 on pricegrabber.com
i know it's tuff to compete with online but even on the wolf estore it's still that price soo... i buy online more :D
still a great place

the one across from me has a teacher of photography that i might ask about classes
