I just got my 50/f1.8 II yesterday. Very nice lens, but it's gotten me to thinking. Using a 300D/10D size sensor if you wanted to get close to the feel of a 50mm lens on a full frame body which lens would you go with the EF 35/f2 or the EF 28/f1.8 USM or the EF 28/f2.8?

With the crop factor I think the 35 would feel most like a 50 on a full frame, but the 28 might be more versatile given the crop factor.

Now between the two 28mm lenses photodo seems to rate the f2.8 quite a bit higher then the f1.8. Does anyone have experience with these two side by side?

Thanks,

Mark

PS: Some get L fever. I think I've caught prime fever.

I was not paying close attention to Canon gear for a while (like when the 28 f.18 was introduced), but I think the 28mm f1.8 was created to be the 'normal' lens for DSLRs with the 1.6 crop factor. It is not an 'L' lens like the 24mm f1.4L, and its price is competitive with the 'better' normal for the full frame - the 50mm f1.4. I have seen varying reviews of it. It holds some interest for me, but I might have to actually try it on before I buy one.

I have the 35mm f2, and I like it. No complaints. It is a simple design, which is reflected in its price.

There is so much attention being paid to zooms lately, it is good to see someone who appreciates primes. As I have said before - 'Try one. You may find yourself in the prime of your life.'

I think the 28/1.8 is a great lens for a camera with a 1.6 crop factor. I used one for a couple of years, and it's well made, focuses fast, and the speed really comes in handy. I didn't even think of parting with it until I went to a camera with a 1.3 crop factor.

Incidentally, mine is for sale on Ebay right now ... :D

Man this lens must weigh a ton or more! ...and you thought F2.8 lenses get heavy! :)

Its used for photographing roaches at close range without flash!

It seems I wasn't paying close attention to my decimal points, either. :) :D
