What resolution is best to design web pages for your gallery ?

i ask this because i have a 19" Monitor and use 1600 x 1200 resolution.
(click on the link below to visit my website).

i recently went round a friends house and went onto my site on his computer to show him a certain photo, to my horror my site was awful, all over the place.
It seems he can only view at 1152 x 864.

what is the normal/general resolution of the majority of screens?

Thanks in advance.

If you go for 800x600, you're pretty much guaranteeing that anyone can view your site without problems. It's limiting for design, but it's also half of your potential audience. Check out these stats from May:

The other thing to remember is that people have the full use of screen width, but not height. Depending on the browser and toolbar options, a visitor to your site may have only 800x500 pixels of viewable screen. For this reason (and space constraints), I size pics down to 640x480 for my own site. That way, I'm sure that people can see pics in their entirety.

Some sites, such as Amazon.com, resize to the width of your screen so that you're always getting as much content as possible. Others, such as ESPN.com, max out at an 800x600 resolution so that the page presentation is always the same. There are merits to both, and all that really matters is consistency throughout the site.
