Okay, I keep hearing about good and bad lens is there a site or can you post some of your own pics showing two pictures at the same time taking from a crappy lens and an identical L lens?

Thanks.
Chad.

Not a direct answer to your question, but here are some things that might be interesting:

How To Test A Lens (http://194.100.88.243/petteri/pont/How_to/ha_Testing_lenses/a_How_to_test_a_lens.html) - describes what's important to look for in lenses and shows examples of different kinds of distortions etc.

This review of the EF 70-300 DO IS USM (http://www.e-fotografija.com/artman/publish/article_306.shtml) contains some sample images taken with different lenses, among others a Tamron 28-300 and Canon 75-300, 70-300 DO, 70-200 f/2.8 L. You can easily see the difference...

I recon I could pop over to Ely Cathedral this weekend and take some pics with it with the $80 Sigma lens and the almost $1400 Canon 24-70mm F2.8L to show the difference. That shouldn't be too difficult. I don't think it will be too hard to tell which one is taken with what lens.

I've been meaning to compare my Canon 28-90mm (arguably Canon's worst lens) to my Canon 70-200 f/28 L (one of the best) and check the results. Maybe this will kick me.... I'm quite interested myself, in a strange way.

Ahh yes.. the fabled extremely lightweight f/28 L...

It is one of the best lenses because it is only the size of a lipstick tube and it takes amazingly good images OF THE SUN!

I should think it will be up on here by say Tues evening at the latest, are you ok with that? This is of course weather permitting! The weather here in England is very unpredictable! I have plans for Fri. It may be up as soon as Sat evening England time. (East Coast +5 hrs) Now to dig up the tripod and suchlike...

you're right about that!!

you never know when the sun's going to come out - it could pop it's little head up any time. Of course normally it doesn't bother..... :(

Harumph. I have no smart-aleck comeback. I am sitting here in a hopeless situation, for I have no chance at a counter-attack. I can not quip on anything in your post as you've finally managed to post a reply without a spelling mistake.

Last week we had bright sunshine to start, then it clouded over, no sign of rain, then the temp dropped like 15 deg and then it got really grey, almost blackish (as only us people in the UK know) and started to rain which turned to hail then back to rain back to cloud cover back to bright sunshine. this was over an 8 hr timeframe. Weird the weather here, but you never get bored!

That should be fine. I appreciate it. I may be coming to England for a couple of weeks in September, my first flight, and well yeah first out of country experience.

Where you lokking at going in England? I can recommend tons of places. The Fens (Cambridgeshire/parts of Suffolk/parts of Norfolk/south Lincolnshire) are really flat and very unidyillic. This is not what I thought England would be. However, there are tons of places I can recommend like the rest of England. The Cotswolds and Lake District stick out the most in my mind. They are both really idyillic! If you want more PM me with what you're interested in and I'll see what I can do. Oh above all else, have a proper Sunday Roast at a pub with a pint and Yorkshire Pudding! Beer over here is no big deal, unlike when I left the US for here a few years ago.

No wonder you think our beer is no big deal - the yorkshire pudding is meant to go with the roast not the pint :o

Ahhh...so I had it bass ackwards all this time  :)
Ok, for real, it isn't like in the states that drinking beer isn't anywhere near as socially accepted.

Update on the Ely Cathedral pics...haven't gotten to it yet. I am wondering if it is gonna rain or not. It was coming and going all Friday; Sat was rubbish and today it doesn't know what it wants to do. I am hopeful, though.

unpredictable weather? 80% of time it rains, how more predictable can it be? :P

but summer(the only season stands out, other than that, it's winter all the way but with rain accompanying) is great for photos, sun comes out 4 in the morning and refuse to go down until 10 in the evening!!! :D

What really amazes me a lot is the very small difference I see even at f/5.6 between the 75-300 lenses and the 70-200 at 70 mm.

At 200/5.6 it's clearly visible, but with f/11 the Canon 75-300 lenses are not *that* bad.

What also amazes me is the very bad performance the fabled 28-135 gives at 70 mm ... slightly better than the Tamron 28-300 that might only be the logical choice if you want to do advertisements for eye doctors ... if you see like *this* ... then it's time to visit us

Best regards,
Andy

Ok, whatever turns you on. I can think of much better reasons not to go there though.
