Hi All...

I have a question for you.

I'm rendering a few of my holiday photos and will be cropping/editing/re-sizing etc most of them... then hopefully getting some prints.

Now, i've been re-sizing most of them to about 800px wide and then it'll sort the height out itself (to keep it relative).

I've been adding captions, then borders to the 800px wide version.

My question is, when I then go to get a print - Will it be big enough?

Do you (for instance) keep it at the full 3504x2336 add the borders... then save that as a .jpg then re-size it for web-viewing?

Or do you resize it, save it as a different file, then do the post processing?

Also, do you keep the same size borders for all images? Or do you keep it propotionate? Bigger width borders for larger images etc.

Thanks in advance :)

Amnesia

I always save my edits at the highest quality available, in your case probably 504x2336.

If I need to downsize, I do so after I've added borders, captions, etc. The size of the borders is really a personal taste thing. What's most important is that they frame your image and not take away from it, that's why I usually keep my borders small. Play around and see what you like best.

Thanks for that.

I think that will probably work best. When you do go to resize, doesn't it distort any text/borders you may put on there?

Thanks again,
Amnesia

I keep high res files for making prints - for displaying on the web I use FastStone Image Resizer - a freeware program that allows you to batch resize images to the longest side - I generally make mine 720px - which is fine for web viewing - you can also add watermarks and text to each image such as your logo and a copyright notice.

I'll check out that program after work.

I've been editing a few of my images on full res and the manually resizing them to 800x(whatever-this-happens-be-relative-to).

I think I'll use 800px as I've just spent ages setting up my gallery lol.

Do you keep a PDF of everything too?

Save it as high quality as possible, then if you want a reduced one to post on the web, you can use the Windows XP Power Tool image resizer. It works VERY easily, and can do multiple files.

I've found that Mike's Framer plug-in for photoshop is great for putting mattes and titles on images for web viewing. It will also re-size images for printing but there are better tools for that. I do not keep images sized for printing after they are printed. I try to keep the original. I often crop the image in the RAW process for printing.

I'm given to understand that you should resize before adding any text to your shots, as the resizing could introduce artifacts into the text.
