2007-08-15 Melanie and Yuri

today for a mock-up engagement shoot. Melanie is a young (17 y/o) model I found on ModelMayhem.com and Yuri (21 y/o) is her friend, hoping to get into modeling (today was his first time).

We had a blast shooting, but, we were restricted for time (we had approx 1.5 hours), as Yuri had to work at 4:00. Melanie brought her grandma as an "escort" and to sign the Model Release, and, after hiking down a long, winding, steep trail to get to where we wanted, we decided that it would be best to leave her grandma to "sun bathe" by one of the rocks, as the trail was getting pretty bad and not very easy to hike on for a 70-year old woman. The 3 of us hiked for another 20 mins to the waterfalls you see in these shots. What a great location!

Here are some of the shots I got. I wanted some practice posing couples, lighting them, and, I got some practice working under time constraints.

I think they're great! The only thing I don't like is that in #1 she's leaning a little too far back, and in #6 that she's looking at the camera. I'd rather she was looking at him. Nice shoot!

I have different poses of #1, such as:

But I think i prefer the one I posted in my 1st post. Now that you mention it, I do wish that I had them kissing, but, this was the 1st pose and I didn't know how comfortable they were with that just yet. It took a couple of poses and a bit of chit chat to figure out if I should ask them to kiss or not.

Also, #6, I see what you mean, but I think that her looking at the camera gives a great mood to the photo, a mood that I really was going for. I didn't get any of her looking at him, but I did get a couple variations:

Again, I think I still prefer the one in my original post, just for the mood of the photo.

Okay I definitely like the 2nd version you posted of #6. I didn't like the first one because you could see the profile of his face looking at her and she just seemed like "GET ME OUT OF HERE!" lol. This one's definitely better. I also like the 3rd version you posted where they're both looking at each other. Good emotions

Thanks so much! I really appreciate that. It's all about emotion, character and feeling. That's what I try to pull out of a photo.

For example, I really liked the "splashing" series in this shoot, it really shows "the couple's" emotion and interaction.

Thanks Lloyd, appreciate it a lot. Means a lot coming from you. I wish I had more time and freedom, we were really pressed for time, and Melanie REALLY wanted to go to these falls. So when we got there, we only had 10 minutes to actually shoot. I am planning on going out with her again next week for a beach shoot.

I know! I didn't even know she was 17 until I asked and I was like "WOAH!" lol.

I don't like the crop as much as the full version. Something about how her hair is chopped of, kinda takes away from the flow or something.

These are awesome. The only thing I don't like is that she is making a "model face" in some of them, but I've seen lots of real engagement pictures with the same problem!

I think they should call you "Mr Gets it Right in the Camera and Then Makes You Want to Sulk in the Corner Cause He's That Good and it Looks Amazing after His PP" But Mr. PP is a good short form.
