Just wondering if anyone knows or thinks Canon will introduce the 4 stop IS into the 70-200 2.8 IS and when? I just returned a 70-200 2.8IS because I just can't afford it right now and was hoping when I do purchase it again, it'll be the latest and greatest. That would be pretty cool.

I reported this thread to have it moved to Rumours & Predictions where it belongs...since no one can tell you definitively whether one is coming or not.

I doubt it.. that 70-200 isn't that old.
They'd have to upgrade the 100-400 first.

I would be more interested if Canon brought out something like an EF-S 55-180 f/2.8 IS that would be a better companion for my 17-55 than my 70-200. It should have a strong composite telescoping body so that it will be light and compact and the tripod ring and hood should be included in the box.

To me that would be more inviting than another reworking of the 70-200 f/2.8.

Your talking about canon right? lol

Hey, eventually I'm sure they'll upgrade this one... as to when, who can tell? :p

If you can't afford the current one you probably wouldn't be able to afford the upgraded, newer one as it'd probably be more expensive :p

The new IS (4 stops) wil be used on a new version 100-400 (2 stops vs 4 stops)!
This upgrade is what i have heard (From Canon Amstelveen NL Insider) expected in 2008! (THis upgrade can make some sense!!!
The upgrade for the 70-200 2.8IS from 3 stops to 4 stops will be expected 2009 or 20010THis upgrade doesn't make this lens any better than it already is... Canon wont sell any more lenses than they are already doing of this type of lens! (so what's the point)!

A new 100-400?! Yahoooo! What I want from my 100-400 is very good sharpness from 100-399mm, it's sharp at 400mm but 100-399 could be sharper. A new IS would be wonderful. My fairly new 100-400 would be sold in a heartbeat!

What's the problem from 100-399.... do you have a soft copy of this lens.
Send over to Canon to recallibrate it!

Overkill - it's very sharp at 400mm but less sharp at 100-399mm, I get good sharpness, not very good. The lens, AFAIK, is known of making good sharpness, I get that + very good at 400mm, and I want the 70-200 f/4L IS' sharpness in a 100-400. ;) With its IS too.

Yeah overkill, but that'd cost, like, $5000 and weigh like a 300/2.8L IS!

Wouldn't mind that myself though. :D

Dont regret the fact that youve just bougth an superb lens...
The extra 1 stop of IS wont make a big difference.

They'll do the 100-400 first - the 3-stop IS on the 7-2/2.8 is nowhere near redundant to warrant an upgrade already.

So any other information on the 100-400 upgrade besides IS?

Overkill, you don't happen to know if Canon will 'fix' the sharpness of the 70-200/2.8 IS in the next version? (most reviews tend to find that lens less sharp than its f4 cousin).

I'm sure any upgraded lens will have improved sharpness. I'm fairly certain they wouldn't introduce one that is less desirable but I guess it could happen. Just look at the 70-200 F4's you mentioned, they are newer and are sharper. Technology marches on :).

The Sharpness issue!

The difference between the 70-200 2.8 and the 70-200 4L IS is very
little! The 4L IS is sharper but the difference is like driving a car at 140MPH
or a car at 145MPH!

Ah, so it's a 'splitting hairs' type of difference? Wow, I really am new to digital :D.

Happy New Year all.

I read some rumors about a new Nikon 70-200. I wouldn't be surprised if Canon were to update it to keep pace. In fact, a 24-70IS would be a good move to keep Nikon's new 24-70 in check.

The one 70-200 2.8IS that I used was not very impressive. It may just have been the one copy, but from what I've read it's not uncommon.

Anyone remember when this lens was da bomb? One of my good buddies still has a copy in Minolta mount, I think it's literally a Minolta using Mikkors. When his dad finally upgraded to AF in the 90's he purchased a then new Canon EF 70-200mm/2.8 to replace his classic series 1 for use on a then brand new Eos 3.

The point? Just go and buy the best lens available and move on...I doubt an upgrade from version 2 IS to version 4 will really make a hill of beans improvement for 99% of all photos taken, by anyone.

That now old by many in here 70-200 EF USM is still working just fine on a D-rebel and then a 40D...

Yeah, 40yrs down the road 70-200 still can be mount to 99D with 64 DIGI XXI:)

I do wonder about that. If I spend $10,000 on lenses, Canon could just change the mount in 15 years and it would all be worthless. Nobody expected their FD mounts to be trumped by EOS before it happened. Who knows what technology will bring in just...5 years, but require another mount to implement.

If this is a great fear...their is always Nikon :p
