Fitting into a small pocket, sounds like an SD model. Do you want IS with that? An optical viewfinder? Wider than 35 mm (FF; about 22 on your 30D) focal length?

SD series if small is most important. A series probably have a little better image quality than the SD800 IS I bought. I wanted wide angle, small size, optical view finder and IS, hence the SD800 IS. I love the small size.

I was wondering if the sd1000 has the manual control over the exposer

Good point. The SD800 does not have manual exposure control. The manual controls have nothing to do with setting exposure. The SD1000, I do not know, but think it might not.

Were talking snap shot type cameras here. Lots of DOF comes with the territory.

I don't think any of the SD series offer any direct control over aperture or shutter speed, let alone a full M mode. If you want Tv, Av or M, you'll need one of the higher-end A-series (nothing less than the A570).

i have an SD1000. there are some basic manual controls such as you can control the ISO.

Get your mum to sew you some bigger custom pockets on all your trousers, problem solved! :p

Have you looked at stevesdigicam site? plenty of good reviews on there to browse through.

Cargo pants will work fine. Room for Cell Phone, and a sandwich in the other pockets.

just got my wife an A570 IS from B&H. with the little case, a few high speed cards and a 5yr Mack, it was $265. Great little (and it is pretty little) camera. at 7.1 mp, you don't get very good image quality (better than the higher mp cameras with the same sensor imo). it has full controls so you can still get a little creative right out of the shirt pocket.
