Hi All,
can anyone tell me if (and how...) it is possible to use a 2x converter on a manual focus lens?
I have a Sigma mirror lens that works fine on a D60 on it's own (It actually has a FD mount but I managed to find an EOS converter about 5 years ago, and "fine" is relative term!) If I put the Kenko 2X on it the D60 does the err 01 routine. I've tried taping the 3 pins on the converter, even tried taping them all but it still fails. The Sigma doesn't present any pins to the D60 when it's straight on so I can't fathom out why it falls over with the converter.
Any ideas?

Mmmm,that's odd.
One would assume it should work with all the pins taped...
Maybe it knows the pins have been pushed in but objects because it can't get the info that it assumes should be there?
a long shot i know.... :?

Since the T-con is being mounted first.. (to the camera) the contact on the BACK of the T-con are the ones that need to be taped.. all the diagrams for "pin taping" circulating around the net are illustrating what you need to do to maintain AF on a fully electronic AF system... this requires that the three pins on the FRONT of the t-con be taped...
Did you try taping over the leads on the back of the T-con?

Yes,
the T-con-to-camera pins are the ones I've been trying.
With just the T-con on the camera I get err 01 and without anything at all it fires correctly so something the T-con is doing causes the problem.
hmmmm... <scratches head>

It sounds like the teleconverter is communicating to the camera that there is no lens attached, or something like that. There is some electronics in the T-Con, primarily for the purpose of returning correct f-stop and focal length data to the camera.
I actually thought that the Kenko teleconverters might be immune to this situation since I didn't think that they accurately convey this kind of information to the camera. Apparently, I was wrong.

Just a thought
try taping up a normal lens and see what the 10D does....

Taping all pins with a normal lens results in err 01
go figure...
"dear Canon - if your cameras have their pins taped, how do they know there's a lens attached?"
can ya tell it's a full moon? all these folks howling at their teleconverters...
