I started with a single Bowens flash (second hand), a silver brolly and a reflector with an old curtain lining as a background. Cost about $150 including stands. Its a good starting point and you learn a lot of tricks about making the most of what you have.
Several on here have made studio lights out of industrial lamps but I personally dont like hot lights much.
From there the sky is the limit ....more flashes (5 is nice - main, fill, hair, rim and background), modifiers (snoots, grids, reflectors and sotboxes), decent backgrounds, different colour reflectors, stands. I dread to think what I have spent on mine now.

I'm looking into the exact same thing. I had these (http://alienbees.com/digibee.htm) suggested to me. This set-up is supposed to be very reasonable but still a little out of my reach. I was hoping to find cheaper and maybe even used. Must have strobes though. No continuous lighting, no good around kids and pets.

i just got told i better save up about $1500 to get what i need to take decent pics, if i had 1500 ide buy a damn 70-200 2.8L or something, not a bunch of damn lightbulbs...hehe
yeah, i dont really have to have a pimp setup, just something that will do so i can learn...and it has to be abble to sync up with stuff as i expand and get better

I recently purchased two alien bees & will grow from there. It was pretty much the best/cheapest that I found on the market.
