Hey guys, highschool football season is around the corner here in WI, and I am looking for a sports lens...here is what has been going through my head, keep in mind all games are at night with only stadium lights.

300 2.8
400 2.8

my thought on both:
300 - I am leaning towards getting this lens, I move around a lot on the sidelines and am able to move with the players, so I thought this would be a great lens with good reach paired with my 70-200. Anyone use this lens for what I will be using it for? any of your help would be GREATLY appreciated.

400 - Maybe too long. Less moving around a lot more $$$ But I only consider this lens because I feel that I could always use the reach. Would be nice for track & field also.

My thoughts are with the 300 2.8, But anyone that has used these lenses could give me a little push one way or the other would be great. Thanks guys. Oh yes was thinking about just renting both and take a hands on approach.

Regards,
Adam B

I shoot a lot of high school football at night and I've never seen anyone using the 400 f2.8. I shoot with a few Chicago paper photogs. and they always have the 300 f2.8 and love it. If you shoot other things, the 300 f2.8 takes tc's nicely and you'll have about 400mm reach.

The 300mm prime is excellent paired with the 70-200.

I would say rent both and see which one you prefer.

I like the 400 for football but I use it on a 5D. I might still use it if I had another 1D series camera.
