Finally switched to Mac today and bought a 13 inch Macbook, 80GB, 1GB RAM, etc etc. The cheapest model.
Ive been playing around and refreshing my memory of mac, and just wanted to ask a few things. Is it worth getting an antivirus for my MacBook? Or should i just trust apple saying macs dont get viruses. And if i should, does anyone know of any free ones like AVG for PC's?
Also,
I just plugged in my 20D to see how it performed on my mac. And Lo, it doesnt show that its connected?!?! Do Mac's need drivers for a 20D?
Appreciate the help guys!

I suggest a card reader anyways. Moves the file much quicker than a direct cable to the camera and they can be picked up cheap.
I don't run. AV stuff. It's not needed for the most part. It's mainly insured to catch viruses that you would pass on to a Windows machine if you had files with viruses in them.

I intend to get a card reader, last one broke. However in the mean time, why isnt it showing up that my camera is connected?

Drivers then probably. Do you have the CD that came with the camera? Best suggestion until some one that knows what is going on chimes in is to check that out or check out Canon's website.
Sorry, I'm not much help. I just strictly use a card reader.

That's totally untrue. OS X uses drivers and some times requires installs. I've ran acrossed it before with a MOTU analog to digital interface used for recording music. MOTU, the company, mainly focuses on OS X and Macs, but I still had to install drivers. OS X wouldn't even recognize the device when it was plugged in and powered. Installed the drivers and then it worked fine.

Issue: Is my camera/software compatible with Mac OS 10.4 Tiger?
Solution: Mac OS 10.4 Tiger Compatibility Information
While conducting compatibility tests between the recently released Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) and the software that is bundled with our image communication products, we have confirmed the occurrence of the following problems.
For full compatibility with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) the following applications have been certified:
ImageBrowser ver. 5.5 and higher(OS 10.2-10.4)
Digital Photo Professional ver. 2.0.3 and higher(OS 10.2-10.4)
These versions are available as updates for each supported Canon digital camera model and are accessible from the respective camera models download pages.
PowerShot cameras supporting the PTP standard appear to be fully compatible.
Please go here (http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=DownloadIndexAct) to select your camera models download library.
This is a quick summary of the problems with earlier versions for your information.
Problems applicable to EOS DIGITAL (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SuprtKnowledgeBaseAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=10464#Problems applicable to EOS DIGITAL)
Problems applicable to Compact Digital Cameras / Digital Video Cameras / EOS Digital Cameras / CP Printers
1.Forced shut down during the installation of ImageBrowser 5.1/5.2.0/5.2.0a
Forced shut down may occur when one of the versions of ImageBrowser listed above is installed under the following conditions.
When updating from 5.1 to 5.2.x (Whether installing from the Solution Disk or from the Updater is irrelevant)
When re-installing 5.1/5.2.x after they are installed once and ImageBrowser is subsequently uninstalled
When installing with the OS in an English-language environmentWorkaround:
Investigation is still underway to find an effective workaround.
In some cases, the program can be installed normally by deleting the following files:
English: /Library/Preferences/com.canon.ImageBrowse.ColorManagement.plist2. ImageBrowser 5.1.1/5.2.0 function unusable
The following function of ImageBrowser is confirmed to be unusable:
Unlocking images: Images can be locked but locked images cannot be unlockedWorkaround:
Locked images can be unlocked by opening them with the Finder and deselecting "Locked" under "Get Info" in "General".
3. Alias display problem
There are cases where the aliases of applications may not be displayed normally.
Workaround:
Aliases can be displayed normally by restarting the OS.
4. Problems in setting the number of pages to print
It was confirmed that when setting the number of the pages to print with the applications that have printing functions, the number may stay at the default number and cannot be changed.
Workaround:
Investigation is still underway to find an effective workaround.
It was found, however, that the problem might be solved in some cases with the following method:
By moving the location of the window for setting printing options.
By setting the number of pages to print immediately after the application is started.Problems applicable to EOS DIGITAL
1. Some models cannot be connected to the software
Two models, namely EOS 20D and EOS Kiss Digital N/EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT/EOS DIGITAL 350D, cannnot be connected to the following software:
EOS Viewer Utility: cannot be connected to EOS 20D
ImageBrowser 5.1.1/5.2.0 (CameraWindow): cannot be connected to both EOS 20D and EOS Kiss Digital N/EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT/EOS DIGITAL 350DWorkaround:
There is no effective workaround.
2. Digital Photo Professional 1.5/1.6.1 functions unusable
The following functions of the Digital Photo Professional cannot be used:
Stamp Tool function: The effect of using this tool is not shown in display.Workaround:
There is no effective workaround.
"Batch Process" in Image Transfer settings: Changes made to the destination application settings are not reflected in the actual settings.
(If an application is specified in the "Open image using software" setting, that application does not start. The application set before the change, however, does start.)Workaround:
The setting can be changed by the following procedure.
Specify the desired application for the image transfer.
Start batch processing.
If the application set before you changed the setting starts, close it.
Restart Digital Photo Professional. The countermeasures for these problems are now being discussed.

Mac OS X's Image Capture Application
Mac OS X 10.1 and newer come with Image Capture drivers that support most of Canon's digital cameras with USB interfaces. When a compatible camera is connected to a compatible Mac computer running OS X 10.1 and newer, the computer detects the camera and automatically launches Image Capture. This Apple program allows JPEG images in the camera to be downloaded to the Macintosh. NOTE: RAW files from Canon digital cameras cannot be downloaded in OS X via Image Capture. We suggest the use of File Viewer Utility or an external card reader. Also, movie files shot with PowerShot cameras cannot be downloaded in OS X via Image Capture or iPhoto. We suggest the use of ImageBrowser or an external card reader.
Additionally, Image Capture can access JPEG images directly from a CompactFlash card using an OS X-compatible card reader or using a PC Card Adapter in the PC Card slot of an Apple PowerBook.

Post from Fred Miranda that might work...
Hi Michael:
I just happened to have my XT and MBP sitting here on the dining room table, so I gave it a try. Works great for me. My OS X is version 10.4.9 and my EOS utility version is 2.0.1.
Is your Mac just not recognizing the camera, do you have all the Canon updates installed, sure the USB cable connection is OK, etc.?
Regards,
Dean

Apparently OS X requires EOS utilities to transfer files from the camera to the computer. That's why using a card reader is a little easier. When you get one and hook it up, it's just a matter of opening a file folder and dragging and dropping the contents to where you want it.

Which of the EOS Utilities do i use for that? I've never used any of them for anything? Is there what that simply transfers the files, raw or jpeg, from the camera to a folder without altering any of them ?

Congratulations! You made the right choice. ;)
You won't need any anti-virus software for the forseeable future, so no worries.

The EOS utility gives you the option of transferring all the images or selected images from the camera. Congrats on your choice, after a short time you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. You will need drivers for certain devices but USB and Firewire devices generally don't need them. Printers are one exception I can think of. Read the manual for instructions on using a card reader, it is a little different from other OS.

You might not 'need' an antivirus but there are many viruses out there for mac's so don't be fooled. If a machine can excecute code it can have a virus on it, nothing is 'virus proof'

I would check out the program mellowd found with the folks at the forums at apple before loading it. There are Mac geniuses on those forums. I don't claim to be one of them. I think it would be a courtesy for your Windows using friends at the very least.

True, Even though i move to uni in september to a mac network, i am currently at home on our own LAN. On that network my brothers both have windows laptops, we have a windows desktop, and a windows server that hosts my website. Probably a good idea.

Unlike in Windows, your camera will not show up as a removable drive when you plug it into a Mac. You have three options for transferring the files from your camera to the Mac.
1. Use a card reader (best option)
2. Start up ImageCapture from the Application folder
3. Install EOS Utility and transfer the images using this program
4. Install a 3rd party software and use that instead (OK, I said three options but threw this one in, too).

Again, you don't need anti-virus software on a Mac.
(While you could pass pre-infected Windows files, they won't have any effect on the Mac.)
