I often need to print a number of my images as 8x10's. The format out of the D300 that I use works much better as an 8x12, but that means that I have to use a non-standard matting and frame.
I'm still trying to find my way around Photoshop, but perhaps someone could give me a hand. Is there an easy way to crop to 8x10 without having to keep going back to the resize window to see if you have cropped enough. In other programs I have used, I have been able to overlay a clear 8x10 rectangle so that I could easily see where to crop and get the proportions right. In this ultra expensive program called Photoshop is there an easy way to crop to a set size and still have control over where the crop happens?

Go to your tool bar and click on the Crop tool. Then set the width and height that you want to crop to. Click and drag the mouse cursor from one corner of theimage to the opposite corner and you'll get a marquis that is perfectly proportioned for the format you want. Hit enter when you are satisfied with the composition of the crop.

I would recommend leaving the RESOLUTION blank as shown in the
screen shot above. This way you are not changing the picture, just
cropping it. If you are looking for web sized pics, then you can put
480px X 640px to get a specific pixel size.
Although I find the best way to get a smaller pic is to use IMAGE SIZE
and resample the picture down 10% at a time with the occassional
Unsharp Mask to keep the details sharp.

Another method is to use the Marquee tool and the FIXED ASPECT RATIO
to make the selection, then use IMAGE CROP to crop it.
When using the Marquee tool, it can be useful to hold the space bar down
while making the selection to move the box around (do not release the left
mouse button). Try it.

If you crop to a certain size often, you can add those to the CS menu

Since I haven't seen this mentioned...
For the crop width you can put in "10in" and for height "8in" and Resolution "300" and line up your crop. When done, double-click inside the cropped area and Photoshop will crop AND resize to 3000x2400 - that is, 8x10 @300dpi.
