Problem with canvas transparency in photoshop cs3

Hey guys I have a problem. Im trying to take a picture that was cut out and put on a plain background in photoshop to have a transparent background when displayed on a web page. Now i thought all you had to do was get rid of the background layer. I did this and it shows in photoshop the background then being transparent but then when i save it and put the image in a web page the entire background area is white instead of transparent. Any thing im missing or suggestions????

if your saving it as a jpg it will fill with a color (white) because jpg cannot support transparent pixels. are you??
