uhh, try shooting somthing that has more color and detail. there is no way of tell if the lens is sharp from the test shots given. i know from experence that the canon 75-300 is not the sharpest of lenses but not bad for the price. try looking at the sigma apo macro for about two hundred dollars. are you can save you money for the f4 70-200.

Well.... not quite. But you weren't shooting in the best conditions either.

Here's my insight on this.

Do you want a good tele zoom? Are you thinking about the IS USM version?
Don't get it. Save a little more and get the 70-200 f/4 L... which is not very far from the 75-300 IS USM

Do you want a "compromise" until you get a kick @ss zoom ?
Get the 75-300 USM lens (no IS). It's rated higher optically, and it's a pretty good lens (and cheap). I have it  You can get pretty cool pix from it.

Most people consider the Canon 75-300mm zoom to be economical and lightweight, but not terribly high in performance. I still have one, but I haven't used it much in a long while. It was my first longish Canon zoom lens, so it was better than nothing.

yes, no don't really need IS don't really care to pay much more for that lens

well i don't want to compromise, but i'd like to get a 200mm+ zoom soon.
i have no issue with the cost of the 70-200mm f/4L, but you lose the 100 extra on the end of that.
i know the L will be a better pic but should i ditch that for the extra 100mm?

and i even have no problem spending the 1000 for the 70-200mm f/2.8L but that will be a few months down the road.
I know at some point in time i will get the 2.8L but it's a dew months away
so i'm kinda trying to find a small median for now.
that's why i'm debating the 75-300mm
low price, in a few weeks, and the extra 100mm
high price, more than a month or so, perfect pix
soo...

Get the 70-200 mm f/4L instead of the 75-300, You will be happier with that in the long run even if You loose 100 mm, but You can get most of that back if You get the 1,4x extender.

I had the 75-300 with IS and was happy with the results until I bought the 70-200 mm f/4L.

well if i go 70-200 i'm not stopping at the f/4L i'm getting the f/2.8L
it's 500 more

i've heard of issues with using the 1.4x or 2x on lenses
they say that they degrade the pix, and slow the AF
true?

Hard to tell when you're shooting through a window. Glass could be dirty.

2nd of July 2004 (Fri), 05:01
yeah it's not a great detail shot

i was ok with the way it focued and it's quickness to zoom

but i'm thinking i may just hold out for the 70-200 f/2.8L

lol, I had test shots for that lens almost exactly the same :)

I'm not sure what the prices are in the US, but in the UK at jessops the 100-400 L is less than the 70-200 2.8. maybe that would be a better lens for you as it has 200 extra (isn't as fast though).

So you are trying to compromise
That's ok, I'm doing the same thing. I just need to get one of the 70-200 L lenses some time (still dont know which one).

Get one and sell it at a modest loss on epay in a few months Then buy the one you REALLY :D want
Unfortunately ,great quality 300mm zooms are very rare, you basically have to get a pro 70-200 and use TC's ,buy the rather expensive 70-300DO lens or another good option is the excellent sigma 100-300/4 EX

The issues with TC's;
Do they degrade the pics? Mostly not -i've heard SO many comments -from pros- that their stunningly razor sharp L prime lens is still stunningly sharp with a TC.
It helps that the TC is purpose made to go well with L lenses.Inexpensive ones are not great though.Realy cheap ones are unbelievably bad
Focus;
As far as i know, the 300D can focus up to f5.6.
So the 70-200/2.8 could use either TC while the 70-200/4 could only use the TC1.4

I have this 75-300 4-5.6 USM III and I think it's a very good budget lens.
Of course the 70-200 2.8 is better, but the 75-300 glass is 6-8 TIMES cheaper.
Again, the markets are different.
If you're an amateur or a non-very-rich-enthusiast, keep this glass for a while before an early upgrade. Anyway, you can sell it anytime losing almost nothing.

Likely not what you have heard. With the addition of any more elements to the lens, frankly whether a lens filter or extender (or IS components) you will have a slight degrading of lens sharpness. The key is whether the lens is better even with the added items than another without them.

I have the 70-200 f4.0L and the 1.4X extender and find the combination to be excellent. Yes, the AF on the DRebel will slow in low light conditions at full zoom and the 1.4X but that is because you are at the low end of AF function, which is f5.6.

With the 70-200 f2.8/f2.8 IS you will gain a stop getting you only to f4.0 with the 1.4X and allowing you to go with the 2.0X and not lose AF, although I would not personally recommend this combination. If that is an issue, then I would strongly suggest that you consider the 100-400 IS. In that case, you don't need to buy the 1.4X (unless you want to) and still have 400 (x1.6 crop) reach, IS and the tripod mount for around $1,400. The 70-200f4 does not come with the tripod mount which will add another $114 or so, plus the 1.4X extender at $275 or so.

Lots of choices

I own the non-IS 75-300mm lens, and I like it fairly well. It's pretty soft, especially at full zoom, and it's pretty darn slow to focus, but for the price it's probably worth it. I used it almost exclusively on my recent trip to the Memphis Zoo, and for the most part I felt it did fairly well. Pics here:

BTW, the two snake shots were done with the 50mm 1.8.

I used the Canon 100-300 USM lens for a few weeks. It's a little better than the 75-300 as it has a distance scale, full time manual focus mode and full USM rather that the cut down USM on thr 75-300 lens.

It doesn't cost much more either

I use this same lens and have been very happy with it. The price is right till you can save up for the good stuff.
Here is a couple sample shots at full zoom:

for the 300 mm lens,
A good zoom is the 70 -300 DO. Not a compromise lens and has the IS that you will appreciate once you have used it on the long end, handheld.

One of the best things about the Do is, it is not a big monster. Easy to carry and inconspicuous. 58 mm filter size. Very neat lens if you can reach for it.

I've got a 70-200 L 2.8 IS coming next week. Then I won't really need the 75-300 IS as much; if at all. It's only about 8 months old. Maybe that is what you'd like?

I had the 75-300mm and changed for the 100-300mm and found this sharper.
But if you can hang out and get the 70-200mm f2.8L it tops the lot. 8)

ok i need to add this

when i had the 75-300's both the IS and non-IS
when i zoomed the lens was tuff to zoom
like it was sticky
is this just cause it hasn't been used or is that how they are?
