Hi everyone, I'm new here and I have a problem recently with my Powershot S50...

Its about a year old now, and for about the last 2 months with my 256 Compact Flash card from Sandisk there is problems with Superfine large images. Most of the time they either come out to be corrupted files, or the camera shuts down and tells me error 52. Some of them are not corrupted and turn out to be 'unknown JPEG format' which is where it shows me a small picture of the image with the text under it 'unknown JPEG format'.

This only happens with Superfine Large images, if I reduce the size to lower capacities there is no issue. I am thinking perhaps that the card cannot handle the size of the image, or the memory or latency or maybe the card is just a lemon ?

I have not had a change to try it with another card (I am on vacation now) but I will try as soon as I can.

Again this does not happen with all images, some of the superfines come out to be just fine but its more like 1 in 3 is bad. The images which it considers to be an 'unknown' jpeg format can just be read and imported by the computer. But that is strange that it only happens with superfine large images.

I could post some pictures if that would help you guys...

Thanks...

Dante

Have you reformatted the card recently? You may be seeing the results of fragmentation. My D60 saves the pictures but fails to create a directory entry when I get a very fragmented card (need to use an undelete utility to recover them).

The problem could be in the camera, the camera to card connection, or the card.

Try using the original card, and the remote capture program to bypass the memory card altogether to help find the problem. If it is your card or camera, see about getting it fixed/replaced. While a lower grade image may not be corrupt, you did pay for the higher quality images...

Good luck.

I just tried it with a different card (the one that shipped with the camera)... It's definatively a problem with the camera... Maybe one of the prongs is bent, or there is a cable not firmly attached inside... oh well, thx for all your help guys..
