There doesn't seem to be an archive set up for this extreme magnigication lens.

Anyone got any shots to share?

Hi all,

The past week or so I've noticed a few of you have captured amazing shots with the MP-E 65. So... I thought we could start a thread to show off what the lens can do and of course what the person behind the lens is able to achieve with it.

First I have to say, I do not own the lens, Tammie O from the POTN site (our forum lol) was kind enough to let me play with the lens. I will own this beast one day. :)

On to the photos...

I think 1 to 2 photos...your favorite shots would be enough to get the thread going.

Looking forward to seeing your amazing shots.

I def' would love to see an archive for this lens. I checked the archive thread and didn't see a link for it. I am looking to purchase this glass within a few months after some research and all. It looks like a nice lens.

Quick Note, there is a thread with about three pages worth of posts/photos... guess that could become the archive page?

Thank you!

That's weird that the EXIF isn't intact. I can't see it either, but it really should be there. Hmm...

To answer your question, the fly shot was shot at f/9, 1/200th, ISO200 with my Canon MPE 65mm macro lens. I did not stack that shot.

The only shot I posted that was stacked is the middle one (the dolichopodid fly). I'm not too great at stacking, so I try to stick to a single-shot method. However, I'll try stacking when I find a subject that doesn't move all that much. Docile flies and larger bugs are great for this, because they seem less likely to move away when you take their picture.

Amazing photos, I was thinking about buying this lens and the MT 24. It's a necessity now! What's the working distance on the 65? On B&H it says .78"-1.02" That's freakin close man!

What's the working distance on the 65? good link... http://photo.net/equipment/canon/mp-e-65

I think @ 1x it is about 4 inches... 5x and you have about 1/2 inch? I've only used it once... can't recall. I'm sure someone on here will have the exact distances. I can tell you...it isn't much at all. A hard but rewarding lens to use.

The MP-E 65mm is a standard EF lens and will fit any Canon camera full frame or crop, it is manual focus only of course. It does come with the TMA-B ring mount.

I would not advise selling your 100mm macro however, the MP-E goes from 1:1 to 5:1 where as the 100mm goes up to 1:1, so the two complement each other and you will probably find the MP-E on its own restrictive. Also you will definintly need a good external flash with the MP-E, the MT-24EX is the one to get IMHO.

Note that the EF 100mm macro also works with the TMA-B via a cheap plastic widget, so if you get the MP-E you will will be able to swap the ring mount to the 100mm. I have a little page explaining how to get the plastic widget (£12 in the UK) here http://www.zen20934.zen.co.uk/photography/macroMTF/tma%20for%20100mm.htm

There is a handy review on the MP-E here http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/mp-e-65.shtml

You will still need the 100 for macro though because at 1:1 larger bugs and butterflies ect wont fit in the frame.

That is OK as long as you don't want to fit in the larger bugs like butterflies, damsel/dragonflies, some of the bigger spiders etc. Specially on a crop camera a lot of bugs can't be fitted in the frame with the MP-E.

The MP-E is quite expensive compared to the 100mm and don't forget to budget for flash, though I guess you will still use your 420 on a bracket.

I love the MP-E but the 100mm gets used more, largely because it is easier to shoot in ambient light with and I (almost) always have it with me.

Yes that is a good method, I work in a double pass at present. I would like a second Canon body, waiting to see how the 40D and expected 6D/5D+ stack up. Full frame with the same pixel density as the 20D is what I am looking for.

PS I should think the MP-E is much less restrictive on full frame (largest subject 36mm).

when it comes to talk like that it confuses me..sorry:oops:

I thought it was plain enough, not meant to confuse.

I have a 20D, so I would like a full frame with at lest the same pixel density and noise performance so I can crop and still have the same quality as I do with the 20D. So 16Mp full frame, only use the center 40% of the frame (APS-C size) and you still have 6Mp of usable image (not quite a 20D 8Mp). And of course I want this without the size weight and cost penalty of a 1Ds Mk II or III.

A full frame camera sensor is about 36mm across and a APS-C is about 22mm. The lowest magnification from the MP-E is 1:1, so on APS-C a subject bigger than 22mm can't fit in the frame, but on full frame you can go up to a 36mm long subject.

So a full frame would mean the MP-E is less restrictive in terms of maximum subject size, a lot of the bigger bugs you can't quite fit in on APS-C.

Is that clear or more confusing.

I'd soooo love to see the "at its maximum magnification, you can fill a 35mm frame with a grain of rice (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=155&modelid=7325)" picture!

:D

Awesome shots all!!! Some really cool stuff in here, I've enjoyed it immensely. Can't wait to pick one of these up... one day...

I'm not anywhere near the standard of others but thought it might be useful to show what a relative MP-E novice can hope to achieve.
Shot yesterday (upside down) hand held 1/160, f/11 and flash.

The dust was on the lens. The little bugger was under the window sill outside and I was upside down shooting up at him. Just checked a few more shots from yesterday with a different lens and they look clear.
Thanks for the observation though as I hadn't noticed the flecks.

How close do you have to get to your subject with this lens?

From about 10cm to about 3cm

What kind of flash do you use with this lens? These are some awesome shots.

Ideally either of the Canon macro flashes or the Sigma one, especially with the MP-E where the working distance is insanely small. It's the only way to get sufficient light in there.

Are you guy shooting handheld ? I have this lens, just recently, and it drives me crazy to try and get good shots, well mostly the bugs wont stand still hehehe
I like the 100 and 180 a lot, this one is proving more dificult, I am ordering a RSS head for it to see if I can get anything more out of it and also a ring to mouth my two 580eX II flashes

With this lens you almost have to have a very sturdy tripod and focusing rails. At 1:1 or even 2:1 you can get shots handheld, but at 5:1 life size, it's simply not possible to get a shot of anything you want handheld.

All handheld. Ul find if u try use a tripod by the time u get the camera in the right place, that bug is LONG GONE!

(some people like LordV use bean poles like a sort of monopod)

Well you've proven me wrong. :)

When I had my 150 Sigma I had no problems with 1:1 handheld, but good god I figured 5:1 would be damn near impossible without a pod and rails.

I need to learn to use my 1DsIII live view better, I am sure it will help with this lens since I can use the 3" screen to focus, too bad it is not practical or I would even use my UMPC's 7" screen for this, but holding camera in one hand and UMPC in the other does not sound practical!!
