I've been looking into black and white photography lately, however, there are various ways on Photoshop CS which you can convert a image to black and white, and i'm just wondering how many different ways are there? and what are the advantage and disadvantage of each? Can someone give me a brief walk-through on these methods?
many thanks

Two of my favorite methods:
1. add a new layer using gradient map and make the foreground black
and the background white. then drag the midpoint around until you are
happy with the results.
2. CALCUALTIONS method. Combine the red and green or blue
channels and adjust the amount as desired. then convert to b&w in the
MODE menu and discard all other layers when it asks, then i convert
back to RGB.
