Has anyone traveled lately by air with a tripod? I am going to Costa Rica and want to carry my tripod strapped to my camera backpack and was wondering how TSA would look at this.

Havnt flown myself yet, but going by what ive read on here it would probably be best to put it in your checked luggage and just take the camera bag on with you.

I travel all the time with my pods and I jsut wrap them in my clothes in my rolling luggage. Works great and have never had an issue.

Very sound advice. I just flew into Seattle today and had my tripod in my checked baggage.

There have been quite a few threads on air travel in the past few months.

I just returned from Europe and Canada. I carried on my tripod as a backpack. Never had a problem with any airlines or any airport.

Do any of you bring your camera as a carry on? Also the x-ray machine has no affect on the camera?

Never, Ever put your camera in the underbelly of the plane, unless you have some very heavy duty carrying cases, and really good insurance. Even going in the cargo hold, luggage can gets x-rayed.

X-Rays have no affect on digital camera equipment or most film cameras either.
Some high ISO films and infra red films can be bothered by x-rays but can be protected by special film pouches, or simply taking them out of the case, and handing them to the security officers for visual inspection.

I always carry by equipment in my backpack, and just put the tripod and monopod in my checked luggage.

I keep mine in the check bags. It works well if they don't lose your bags, like they did with mine last night.

I check 'em too. Less weight to haul onto the plane, plus overseas flights or commuters may decide to weigh the bags.
