How do I set-up camera or what setting to use fill flash ?
It would be for flowers in the shade of leaves right now but want to know for general pics also .
Any goods books on it ?

Practice practice practice

In Av or M mode, the flash will auto meter to produce fill when in bright situations.

usually its by setting EC to -1 or -2 depending on situation. in manual mode+off camera flash its a little more difficult to get your head round, but have a read on http://strobist.blogspot.com on balancing ambient with flash.

FINALLY found out how to set up for fill flash .
In "P " , Tv, Av, M , and A-DEP Set fn 8 to "0" . This sets all 5 to evaluative
"0" = evaluative metering .

Set fn 8 to "0" . This sets all 5 to evaluative
"0" = evaluative metering .Just to clarify, that's custom function 8 on the RebelXT and XTi. 0 is the default value, for Evaluative E-TTL.

On most of the other camera bodies it's custom function 14. But don't take my word for it. Read your instruction manual to be sure.
