Do you think Canon will drop the price on their current 5D prior to the release of its "replacement" early next year? I would really like a full frame, but have been holding off in hopes of not having take out a second mortgage on my home. ;)

I am sure the price will drop, by how much I don't know but I suspect it will be a few hundred bucks at least.

Has Canon announced a "replacement" for the current 5D model for early next year? I don't think they have, or it would have been all over the boards.

yeah this is all speculation. I doubt they're going to mention the 5d replacement the same week they unveil the 40D and new 1Ds MKIII.

Buying a 5D (or any for that matter) in Jan.,Feb. will be the cheapest time of year. Especially if Canon has active rebates going!

From my memory I don't remember seeing any major price drops as new bodies replaced older ones. The 1D3 didn't cause the 1Dmk2n to drop by much if it even dropped at all, and the 20D didn't either from what I remember when the 30D was announced.

when the new 30d was released i bought a new 20d for about $250 less. that's about a 20% drop.

the 5d has no competition.

the 6d or whatever it's called will be the first. if the improvements are significant you may see up to a 20% in the 5d but probably less, imo.

I'm pretty sure it will be called a 5D still with some number added? Don't they pull the older model off the shelves when the new ones come out anyway? You'd think they'd want to put them on sale, especially around x-mas, to get rid of the old.

well, they did kill the 1DmkIIn when the III went on sale. nobody seem to have the 1DmkIIn for sale anymore...

Yeah - they must do it because they want to sell the more expensive models, so they just axe the old ones from the shelves.

it might also depend on how many cameras are in inventory. i think in general 5d sales have been disappointing for canon so they may have a few .... but that's a wild guess :D.

That plus popularity may be the key factor to discounts. Something desirable but with limited inventory doesn't need to have a price cut, but if inventories at the manufacturing & distribution centers are high then discounts will be needed to clear them. I doubt they would scrap them to make people buy the newer model.

Actually, the Mark IIN did drop quite a bit. When the Mark III was released B&H had the Mark IIN's for around $3,299.00. That about a drop of $1,200 from the MSRP. Of course at that price the sold out pretty quick. Especially with the AF problems people were talking about with the Mark III.
