Hello everyone. About 2 months ago I bought a Powershot A70, macro set and sharpshooter lens. I've been really hooked. The canon a70 is good but I prefer to manually focus with the lens, don't know why I just hate not doing it like that. ^_^ I also wanted a DSLR...
Anyways, next month I'm visiting a friend in NYC for the first time. Will the kit lens be good enough? How is this lens anyways. I don't really have a choice since this camera put me $930 into debt... Btw I have 2x512, 1x64 and a 16 meg compact flash card. Should this be enough for 3 days using the highest JPG settings? I'm stuck with this lens.. say until I pay this camera off at xmas, lol.. I couldn't resist the A70 just isn't good enough for this trip.

Congrats on the drebel. That amount of memory should be good for 300-330 shots or so. I think? At the highest jpeg setting.

The kit lens is great for the price, but after a while you will run smack into its limitations and want something better. You think you're in debt now, wait till you start buying those lenses...
For now, until you can afford better lenses, I would reccommend you try to pick up a cheap 80-200 lens so you can have a little zoom and the 50mm. The two of those together shouldn't set you back more than another $200.
And that memory will be enough for a day trip of shooting, but if you go on vacation you WILL need more.

Check pawn shops. You can find steals on the cheaper Canon lenses there.

That brings me to another question. I have 2 old Canon lens.. They are the fd 55mm and fd 135. Any chance that they will work on the rebel?

I don't believe so, as I believe the fds are manual focus lenses only, right?
You might try selling them online to get yourself the other lenses though.

Yes they are old SLR lens.. I can't really sell them, they are actually my dads, I'm the only one who ever uses em but there is no way I can sell them. =(

Check pawn shops. You can find steals on the cheaper Canon lenses there.

You might also find stolen more expensive ones

A good source for legitimate cheap Canon lenses also might be eBay ... a lot of people go digital (but with a P&S, so they don't need their lenses any more).

Of course, there are also Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses, that *might* be less expensive than Canon lenses. However, not all lenses are equal ... a good first look might be www.photozone.de (look for the EOS lens tests) that give an impression how the optical quality of a certain lens is rated by others.

You can not use FD lenses, they won't work on the 300D.
You need EOS lenses.

Best regards,
Andy

And you might break your leg walking into the street. But that also seems like a pretty pointless objection to what I said.

Legitimate, perhaps. Cheap, no. Ebay auctions tend to run about as high as retail. Ebay is great for sellers, not very good for buyers.

Not a bad review, but not entirely accurate. I've taken some great photos in low light with my 12-24. It's just as sharp as the Canon 17-40L from the samples I took with both of them.

Hello again. I actually ordered the Digital Rebel Kit on July 1st from www.amazon.com I didn't really have a choice about where to order from since I had to pay with my Amazon credit card. It was $899.94 which I think was pretty good now to just spend the rest of the year paying it off SLOWLY x.x I ended up getting it with it's lens because it's the cheapest lens they had and I can't spend anymore money until I pay off the camera. I really hope I can find a decent way to take pictures of this lens when I go to NYC to visit my girlfriend on Aug 7th. Ofcourse I won't be taking pictures of NYC that much, mainly her. :D Any ideas on how to put this lens to good use?
Also the kit is coming on Thursday according to ups's 800 number, I'm so excited, please tell me the battery comes charged so I'm not not watching the light blink for 2 hours. I swear I'll sit here just looking at it blink thinking *hurry up!*....

It will likely arrive with a half-charged battery. Slide it into the battery charger and leave it for an hour or two. It's no big deal. It will take you that long to browse through the manual, anyway.

My rebel will be here tomorrow finally!!
All I have for now is the kit lens, am I going to be able to blur the backgrounds at all with this lens ?

You should have no problem getting plenty of blur in the background, but of course that will depend on how close you are to your subject and how far away the background is. The kit lens will probably be fine for you for this trip as long as you don't need to zoom in on anything very much, but naturally later on you will likely want more. :D I actually enjoy using my kit lens for shots of buildings and such. Here are a few:

http://img70.photobucket.com/albums/v214/lamplightsg/Nashville-5-31-04/IMG_4894.jpg

Nothing special, but it is certainly adequate for wide angle shots if your like me and can't afford a 17-40 or similar. :D

Thats another problem, I don't like wide angle.. I'm more of a zoom, zoom, and zoom some more sorta guy.. I love this camera so far.
