Well, I tried it this weekend and the Canon 580 on master fires the Metz 58 in slave mode. I tried, inside my house with light tan walls, various angles and corners to see what the usable distance inside was and basically within 15 ft. of the flash as long as it isn't around a corner, you can fire it. I haven't tried it firing my 580 into an umbrella and the Metz on a stand, but I have a feeling it will work fine within a reasonable distance (i.e. 15 ft or less and with no obstructions). I will be trying this scenario tonight.

All I did to set it up was have both flashes on manual, then switch the Canon 580 to master (little switch on back toward bottom of flash), then switch the Metz 58 to slave via going into the PARA settings, scrolling down to remote, then select "slave."

That's it. Works like a charm.

As I test the limits of this configuration (i.e. umbrellas, outside, etc...), I will have more answers to post here.

The slave sensor on the Metz is on the upper left corner (if you were looking at the lcd) so, if you swivel the head to the right the sensor is exposed and you should get more distance out of it.....

Oh, thanks so much. Good idea since the umbrella, etc... doesn't care which way the body is angled, but only the head.
