I'm new to POTN since I'm new to my Canon 30D. No serious photo excursions with it yet but I have a couple of "My camera came today!" photos I'd love critique on. No need to be gentle as a design education has gotten me used to that and I'm all about getting better.

First one, natural light:

Very sharp pics. Especially with that lens! I bet you're super happy with that camera.

i like the first shot better, the second isnt as interesting. not bad for new guy!!

There is a place for shallow DOF, but not in #1. That needs clarity throughout, and it isn't there.

I like the flower. Nice composition, and the background is not too distracting.

I think I agree on the shallow DOF on #1. There was something bothering me about that shot and I think that's it. Thanks.
