View Full Version : 1D or 10D as backup for Mk II?

I found a 1D yesterday that was just too good a deal to pass up. I'm going to use it as the backup for my Mk II. I think it will be easier trying to learn one set of controls and only have to carry one type of spare battery/charger, etc..
The 1D is in absolutely gorgeous condition and shows less than 2,000 shots on the counter. I bought it from a reputable dealer, so I'm not concerned about it being stolen. There are a couple things missing however. Most of them are no problem, and are things I probably already have laying around (neck strap, etc.). There's no box or warranty card, but all the important cables are there as well as the battery charger and AC power converter, and the IEEE1394 cable. The main things missing are the manual and the bundled software CD. I'm sure I'll have little trouble tracking those things down.
I’ve taken a couple test shots with it and it seems perfect. I never knew 4.1 mega pixels could look so good.
Does anyone who has used both cameras have any thoughts on the suitability of the 1D as a backup to the Mk II? Or am I better off keeping my 10D (which I’m not using at all these days)?
Opinions?
Thanks,
Tom

If I come across on a deal for a 1D I'd snag it in a second. It's the perfect backup fot the MKII. Well, other than a second MKII that is.

I ended up keeping my 10D and selling the 1D... but that was so I would have a more "portable" option in the 10D.
Ideally though. the 1D makes the perfect back up for the MkII. The controls are nearly Identical.. and so is the performace. For myself.. now switching back to the 10D on occasion.. it's rather amusing .. the AF etc... seems pretty darn slow. You won't have that issue with the 1D.
Were a pro,. and of having a backup were the only reason for a second camera, I would have DEFINATELY kept the 1D.
Before you hock your 10D though.. try the whole set up out. You may find yourself missing the smaller camera at times...

Familiarity-wise it makes sense to have the controls similar, etc.
Selling the 10D will put you out of the 1.6 crop-factor business, which will reduce the effective reach of all of your lenses a little.

Bollocks doesn't the 1d have a 1.6 crop factor so no problem here.

There's one argument in favour of the 1D. Your lack of use of the 10D. If you suddenly needed to use your backup camera you could be a little lost if it was the 10D.

Take a look here and see if this helps.

Don't worry ... I'm not in the market for a 1D at the moment
Also, Belmondo only buys *very* special items like 1.0/50 lenses as speculation stock... not run-of-the-mill 1D's.
Best regards,
Andy
