Importing lenses to the USA...cutoms?

Checking the only information I could find, I came to the conclusion that, for any country with favorable trade status, the import duty on camera lenses is 2.5% of value. Can anyone verify this?

Also, does anyone know if there is a seperate export tax on lenses leaving Hong Kong/China or Japan??

Have you tried speaking to USPS? Everytime I've sent something back to Australia from the USA, they've added the applicable taxes at the post office.
