Now that the G9 has come out, what am I going to do with this G7 crap??
I liked the G3 so much more than the G7. I'm going to express RAW frustration by smashing this piece of SHlT and sending the pieces back to Canon. I want my $500 back to buy a G9. The G7's dynamic range is a JOKE!!!! It's just not fair. And what happened to G8?

I have a G7 and like it (even though I have a 5D). The DR is what you expect from a small sensor with 10MP and can be tamed by careful exposure and choosing a contrast setting of perhaps -1. It does have its limitations but is one of the best P&S available currently, all of which have some limitations.

But why would you think a G9 would be better? If anything, with 12 MP it will be worse in respect of noise and DR.

Dunno why there was no G8 though, unless it sounded too much like an annual political gathering...

I understand. I just hope my G5 does not give out. The earlier 'G' series was so damn good.

i hear you bro. i have a G7 which i bought 2 months ago and i feel so ripped off. but that's like i guess. having said that, the G7 takes really good pictures for a P&S. almost as good as an SLR in good light. low light is really bad though. worse than some other P&Ss. :(

I think the reason why they skipped the G8 was when you say the letter "G" and the number "8" in Chinese, it is like saying pussycat minus the feline part.

Yep. 8 is a lucky number, atleast in Chinese culture. One reason the Beijing Olympic games commence on 08/08/08.

Just a reminder that G3s can be had quite cheaply on ebay.

Let me ask you this. Was your G7 crap before the G9 came out?

Have you actually taken a picture with the G9 and verified that it takes better pictures than your G7 and makes your G7 look like "crap"?

Thats what I thought.:D

Sure the G9 will be a wee little bit better than the G7 but the G7 will always be a great camera in its own right. Besides if you dumped your G7 right now you would miss out on thousands of picture taking opportunities between now and mid October when the G9 is finally released.

For me I always take the wait and see approach when a new model comes out. By next summer my G7 will have about 25K clicks on it and will probably be wearing out. By then the bugs should be worked out of the G9 and they will only be about $300. Thats when I will make the leap "if" it ends up being any better.

The sky is not falling because canon came out with a couple of new cameras. Your G7 is still an excellent camera and always will be.:D

WOW! When do you use your DSLR?

I use the DSLR when I am going somewhere for the pupose of taking pictures which is unfortunately not often enough. The G7 is with me all the time and hardly a day goes by without taking some shots with it. It already has about 13K clicks on it. Some of the best pictures I have taken in my lifetime has been with my G7.

It is a little weird that there is no G8, mabye it has something to do with Canon not wanting to be associated with the G8 summit, just a theory. Though really the G9 is more like a G7 mk2 than a new camera.

Anyway for those that think the G7 is crap, let me know how much you want and I may take it off your hands.

Does the G7 have adjustable contrast settings? How do you change them?

I don't know what Canon did to the G series of cameras. I love my G2, and it has RAW on it as well. At what point did Canon remove this awesome feature?
Just this last weekend in Yosemite, I was using my 20D and my seven year old daughter was using my G2. In fact, I would love to find another one to convert to IR. Yes, I know. I can find them on eBay and Craigslist.
