Hi guys!

I have a habit of enhancing my digital photos (jpeg format) in a image editing software. Does this degrade the quality of the photos???

Thank you.

Slightly, yes. but if you only use subtle changes it shouldn't too much.

Always keep a copy of the original, then if you overdo something, you can go back to it again.

If you're not doing so already I suggest learning how to use layers and them use them when ever possible. Example instead of choosing image> adjustment>levels, choose layer>new adjustment layer>levels.

I'm under the impression that every time you open a jpeg image in post processing software, that image is degraded.

You lose some info from a jpg everytime you save it, as that is when the lossy compression happens. How much depends on the level of compression.

When editing use layers, and Raw and tiff formats during the editing process.

Then only convert to jpg for the finished pic (if that is what you need)

the more you push a file away from it's capture to gain better exposure or balance, the more noise can be exposed...as a jpeg already has some compression artifacts present, even on high settings, this can be made worse, and then subsequent saves and edits make it more so.

as said, leave jpeg until the end and use non lossy formats or keep to raw as long as you can.
