It looks like you nailed everything except the eyes.

A little fill flash next time will give just enough light to show up in the eyes. As for PP, I really like them.

You can also use the Dodge tool in Photoshop to brighten those eyes.

For now you could create a new layer, do a quick selection on the eyes and adjust levels, which is what I did here. I really like the photos and your B/W conversion, other than the missing eyes.

I am away from my CS3, can't help. But I'm thinking some contrast with the levels might help. I really like the shots. Maybe it's because they are zoo animals?? The eyes are just flat, no life in them.
