canon has updated every single SLR line (XXD, 1D, XXXD) in the last ~12 months, aside from the 5D. nikon's countered w/ the D40 and D40x, and D80.
you gotta figure they've got *something* coming out soon...

It's suppose to be official on 23rd of August. If it's true what I heard, Canon will finally have to stop fooling with us. And it would be about time, to finally have some decent competition. On the end, it might mean a bit less revenue to Canon (like I would care), but much more good stuff for us (and yes that's what I do care about) :)

I haven't heard anything but I'm really wondering what Nikon's going to offer. I wish we had a specifically dedicated news section for all the official (not speculative or comment related...just the news releases) updates (canon as well as others). It would be nice to know what's new out there w/o going over to dpreview.

I have read a new D3 with FF/DX crop mode with 9/11 fps shooting speed respectively and up 12800 ISO but who really knows. Its all just rumors until you actually see a press release.

Nikon can't even make their own full size sensors. So how are they going to compete with Canon. We, as consumers, wish for more competation.

actually nikon offeres a great deal of competition. If they'd fix their high iso issues, it's my belief Canon would be in for a big loss of market share. (partly because of how canon has been handling customer service over the M3...it's not inspiring by any measure). Nikon has been offering weather sealing on some of their non-pro bodies for a while. Their comparable bodies are all less expensive than their canon counterparts. Their good lenses are a bit higher priced though but not too bad. Overall, they've got some nice looking cameras that would be a serious consideration if the iso wasn't so grainy.

I just read on DWF that the latest is that they are making a D2H replacement that will be FF, lower end of the mega pixel race according (8-12?) and unheard of ISO performance. Plus an all new AF system that is supposed to be a huge improvement. Then they're supposed to make a D2Xs replacement later next year at FF and high resolution like the 1DsIII.
The most interesting thing is that they're reportedly going to drop CCD sensors in favor of CMOS.
Hmmm..... Things just may get really interesting now.

On the contrary - The Nikon D80 and D200 are both more advanced than the 30D. Canon bringing out the 40D will probably push them ahead again.
Wait to see if Nikon bring out a D200+
