I was wondering what you guys think about Sigma lenses. Are they of good build quality and do they produce sharp images? The reason I'm asking is because I was searching around, and the D70 Kit is cheaper with the 2 Sigmas than with the Nikkor lens, and it seems as if getting the 2 lenses for such a low price would be advantageous.

The two I were looking at are the Sigma 28-80mm Autofocus Lens, and the Sigma 70-300mm Autofocus Lens, which are coupled with the Digital Rebel at RitzCamera. (http://www.ritzcamera.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langI d=-1&productId=13102951&cmCat=SEARCH)

Just wondering what you guys thought.

Sigma makes some great lenses, however...these two are not included.

I know this because i bought the same package with my rebel 2000. I regret wasting the money on them.

The 28-80 isnt all that bad, i dont like what it does to colors.

The 70-300 on the other hand, is useless at 300mm and anything less then f/9.

I suggest spending your money elsewhere.

Thanks for the heads up Timmy. I guess I will have to spend the extra money. :(

Ya get what you pay for.

But there are great cheap lenses...as most will tell ya. The 50mm f/1.8 is simply awsome, and cheap as heck.

On Sigma lenses, there are some good ones out there...Look for the Sigma EX HSM line like the Sigma 120-300F2.8 EX/HSM/IF/APO that I have. Here is a pic I took, just because well it doesn't exist as we knew it once did. This was taken 24 Oct 03, Heathrow Int'l Airport on its last commercial flight. With out further adu I present Alpha Golf as we call it, or G-BOAG.

Please click on it to see full size, it is 2160x1440. Just FYI, the aforementioned 120-300mm F2.8 lens is not cheap!

He's asking about a $250 set and your telling him to buy a $3000 lens.

I have the two Sigma lenses you mentioned in your opening post. Unfortunately, they're "budget" lenses and are decent, at best.

Now, the Sigma EX HSM series lenses are AWESOME! I decided to save myself about $250 and get the Sigma 17.35 f/2.8 over the Canon 17-40, and I've no regrets what-so-ever. Definitely a fantastic all-around lens. You'll pay about $400-450 USD for it, depending on where you go.

But remember, in photography, the lenses are the BEST investment you can make for yourself.

Yeah, that was not what I was getting at, the point I was trying to illustrate ties in with what you said about getting what you pay for. The beast is about $1900 give or take a little.

I was trying to throw it out there that there are good lenses like in the first line to look at the Sigma EX HSM, and I eluded to the exampled of the one and only EX HSM I have. I would like to be able to compare it with another one, but I have Canon L to fill in between 16-70mm at the moment.

Isn't that in the great tradition of this forum? :P

In answer to the original question. Like all manufacturers of lenses Sigma make some great lenses, some mediocre lenses and some real junk. Unfortunately, the good lenses are rarely the cheap ones. There are exceptions to this rule such as the Canon 50mm f/1.8... but they are few and far between.
