View Full Version : Don't people work 9 to 5 anymore?

By the amount of posts on the forums from North Americans during business hours, it's no wonder companies complain they lose billions in productivity due to non work related net usage.

I'm not complaining... as I'm in Canada and it's 1:15pm so count me in. :)

Just wondering out loud.

I'm a work at home folk, and I have a boss...

Most Americans are asleep during the first part of my day, so I have to do work until they start waking up.

Yeah, it is. My wife stays home with my three kids (2,4,6). The lowest paying, yet hardest job you will ever love (?). I tried staying one day with my kids and whoa, I will rather work 70 hours and commute 4 hours a day than do that again. My hats off to you and other stay at home moms!

As most of my meeting are over the phone, I keep a window open to POTN. When I’m not talking or having to pay very close attention, I read a few posts.
Guilty! I hate my job. Nothing to do most of the time and then I get slammed with work.
Well I hate my job as well, but I usually have all kinds of things to do. Trouble is that it is never ending. I start early, somewhere around 6:00 am. and am still on the phone until midnight. It is never ending.

Have never worked 9 to 5! 7 to 6 maybe!
I always wondered what a 9 to 5 job would be like. To be able to leave and actually have an evening off. WOW!!

Well, unless you are a part of a big corporation. You may be local IT/IS, but if you are running off of a Proxy and/or worse, Websense, they may not say anything, but believe me they know, someone knows...

So give us some tricks of the trade. I ha heard somewhere that you can surf from inside a Word document and it avoids the surf police.

Won't work. If there is a proxy server involved. All Internet traffic is diverted to the proxy server so that only the proxy's IP address is available to the public. If you do an IP trace to my post, you will not get me true IP address, but the address of my Proxy Server.

But keep in mind, that all Internet bound traffic and traffic originates from the internet are all routed through the proxy server(s). There may be literally millions of entries per day. Each time a resource is access from the internet it will log. For instance, opening this site, you can easily download 100 different resources just by loading it up. So it is easy to get your activities hidden in the mess of everyone else's activities. But, if you raise suspicion they can filter the data so that only your data is visible and sorry, Charlie. Now with Websense running on your proxy, it is even worse. Websense will/can create reports on everyone, some people or your activities in a blink of an eye. It will also track time on the internet, etc. It will/can contact your direct report to notify her/him that you just tried to access a filtered content site.

Cheers mate,
Check my blog and you can see how busy I have been. I've just got a job as a Customer account manager, for a national finance company... so I have targets, a portfolio of accounts which I must keep in contact with, make sure they're not falling behind, and some selling and signup of loans and insurances. I hope to be out of here in 4-5 months, then have a few weeks off.

Trying to plan my next few weeks. Canterbury this weekend to see family, and photo opportunities.
Duxford museum/airport near Cambridge soon
Shoreham airshow in 4 weeks
Stonehenge
White cliffs

And end of year, Lake district, more of Scotland.
PM me anyway sometime, or respond to a thread of mine, or I'll probably forget about this post.

I was laid off from my last job a year ago. At my age it's hard to find steady work, especially with a history of five jobs in the last ten years. I'm still looking, but right now I'm more semi-retired and shooting part-time for an aviation monthly. My wife loves it because she no longer does house work... I do it all.

Then, it will as always come down to cost. Is it currently functional? Not ideally functional, but can you still get productivity from the machines without incur too much cost due to the lack of performance, which will considerably offset the cost of a new machine or machines? If yes, time to see the "Computer Guy" and buy some machines. If not, then even though it sucks, you are not losing enough money to warrant the purchase.;)
