View Full Version : Magicstor 2.2GB Err 02 message on 10D

I've been using IBM 1GB Microdrives for the last two years regularly shooting in excess of 25,000 images per year without a hitch. I thought it was time to recyle my microdrives and noticed IBM has sold its business to Hitachi. When comparing current alternative offerings I noticed Magicstor have released a 2.2GB which claims exceptional price/perfomance from the same technology. So I bought one, after formatting the card several times in camera, I then did burst tests to make sure I was happy with the card, download tests etc. Everything was OK. So I then takes it out on a live shoot, feeling cool about the ability to shoot up to around 800 images on one card, and then I start getting Err 02 messages.

Power off, take the batteries out, power on etc etc. Reshoot, then more Err 02 messages. So I switches back to the IBM drives and carry on shooting, no problem. Even tried it on my other 10D and got the same problem with the Magicstor.

Before I go to Magicstor, who incidentally claim this card is aimed at high end DSLR's as well as the mass MP3 market and PDAs, any gurus on the forum that can throw some light on the problem. Is it write problems with the card? Its a shame, because its a brilliant leap forward in storage space.

Cheers Wayne

if its showing an error, wouldnt it be a connection issue with the camera? i just dont see the drive having any write issues for no reason...

i had a similar problem with the magicstor 2.2 gb drive. i would be taking pictures with my 300d and it would just lock up and shut off, then restart. it would happen when it was writing to the drive. it would do it randomly to and i have no idea what the prob is.

I don't have a microdrive myself, but I've read about compatibility problems with Magicstor microdrives before on different Internet forums.

I also have a computer magazine here that has a column about the Magicstor microdrive. It says: "Is the Magicstor a cheaper alternative for larger CF cards? Certainly. It can be used in mp3-players and PDAs and in some cases also in digital cameras". I wonder what they mean with "in some cases"... ???

If it's still new, I'd go back to the shop and exchange it for something that does work...

Some digital cameras cannot format the very large CF cards and microdrives.

This is the worst piece of crap I've ever had...

I'm sad to remember that due to this little dreadful device, I've lost a full day of shooting at Athens in Greece at the Acropolis.

I use my 10D with the magicstor, and I've encountered a lot of 02 error.

I've change it for an Ultra II 512mb from sandisk.

Now, I use exclusively two 512mb ultra CF and a portable hard drive (Jobo Giga2).

i've seen a lot of problems with the magicstor at my work!

it's always the err02 message because the card won't write!
i know some camera shops here who sold them, stopped selling them because of the problems!

i've got an IBM md and have never had any problems with it but it will be replaced by 2 sandisk ultra II 512mb soon because IMO it's more reliable.

Not only are they trash.. but they simply do not work in the 10D. period.

The vendor that I got my "sample" unit from .. now includes a list of compatible cameras.. partly do to this forums recomendations (and many returned units).. the 10D is not included in the list.

However,. even IF you had a "compatible" camera.. this unit is FAR too risky to invest in.

Magicstor 2.2GB microdrives are the work of the Devil. Avoid at all costs.

Note that I have used (and continue to use) IBM 340MB and 1GB microdrives and a Hitachi 4GB microdrive in the 10D without problems. The Magicstor was, however, a disaster.

I've complained directly to Magicstor, whilst I return the card to Expansys. . Expansys are great, not their fault, but I think Magicstor need a rocket............. bet the reply is the usual cop out . I'll order an Hitachi replacement. Thanks for your replies. Wayne

I'm not going to try to defend the Magicstor product. However, I might take a wild guess that it has a problem with power input.

Somebody might plug one into a card reader at a computer, and it might test fine all day long. Then plug one into a camera that has a sorts of power management things going on. The card might be getting power starved mostly because its designer expected more power to be available.

Mine does the same thing, i think its a problem with the magistor drives.

Anyone want to buy a 2.2gb? $120

Interesting idea, i turned the image review feature off thinking if the screen doesn’t come on the drive would have more power available to it. I got about 60 shots on two consecutive 10-15 min sessions without a single failure. I turned the review feature back to 4 seconds and it failed after 2-3 min. I then attempted a 2 second review time and didn’t experience a failure.

Can someone try this to see if you can replicate my results?

My copy failed all the time.. I have never had the LCD review turned on since the day I got the camera...

There are literally thousands of stories like these about the Magicstor drive on the net...

AVOID AT ALL COST!
