i wouldn't mind owning a 40d but i just want an "inexpensive" camera to back up my 5d.
the 30d has the feaures i want/need (larger LCD, incremental iso) and has the same control layout as the 5d.
i'd prefer a 40d to a 30d but not at a $300 premium......
whoa. i just had one of them deja vu flashbacks all over again....
i think those were almost my exact words when i bought the 20d at a discount after the 30d release :D.

Ed, what are you thinking, son? What is $300 to a Silicon Valley Millionaire like yourself? ;-) The anti-dust, 14 bit color, and maybe lower noise are reason enough to justify the $300...not saying it is a big step up in IQ from your 30D, but for these nicities, $300 is a small price to pay, yea?

the problem is i don't think i would use the 40d that much. i mean if it were my primary body i'd get the 40d in a heartbeat because it sounds like a great camera
i sold my 20d yesterday. it was the camera i had before the 5d. i sold my original 20d after i got the 5d and bought another recently when i learned the hard way that i need a back-up camera.
well after using the 5d for 8 months there were three things about the 20d that really bugged me:
1) the small LCD is worthless because my reading vision is so bad. i'm shooting on blind faith with the small LCD.
2) no incremental ISO. i think incrementai ISO is a big plus when trying to keep noise to a minimum.
3) 100 pictures files...these drive me nuts.
anyhow the 30d has he features i want but i may get the 40d when the price settles. who knows. that bigger LCD might come in handy.
anyhow i've got to get something before we go to africa next year because i'm taking two cameras :D.
millionaire? hardly. i'm an electrician who doesn't like to work too much and my wife teachers high school :D.

what happened to your 5d?
the shutter or something broke on mine after about 15k clicks. and i had a wedding coming up in a week and vacation in about 12 days.
i bought a 17-55 and 20d for the wedding and got my 5d back before vacation.
i actually thought about the XTI but i mostly use the cropper with long lenses and i like the feel of a full size camera better.
the 20d was excellent the first time around but after being spoiled by the 5d's larger LCD and incremental iso i knew right away that i should have gotten the 30d.

yeah, first time I used the XTi was the San Diego zoo. I decided to bring all my lenses (since I had brought them and my 5D on this trip to go on shooting excursions). Well since the 70-200 2.8 is so big, it basically felt like I was holding the lens and pressing a shutter off of it :D Got some nice shots with the reach of the 1.6x crop......probably another reason to keep the 400D myself. Though I did feel out of place with a measly XTi on the big L lens......most the other big lens cameras I saw were Nikon D2Xs. But it's the size of the lens that's important;).....a small 10MP sensor attached to it is not a small stick to swing at also

Argh.....couldn't have happened at a more ironic time. I was looking forward to taking all my photo gear with me on this trip to San Diego. Was there for a business conference, but had enough time to do tourist stuff. I was right at the harbor, where they have the Midway, Star of India....and the CVN Ronald Reagan was at port right across from the Midway. I was going to take a photo that would show old vs new, in an artistic mirrored fashion. But all of that went up in smoke when the 5D started freezing up when I got in the Midway. The LCD froze.....I turned off the camera, then turned it back on. That lead to an Err 99 message. I turned off the camera, cleaned off all contacts, turned on camera again......and still had blank LCD. The camera settings were lit up though. But I couldn't shoot anything. So I thought maybe it was condensasion or something. Decided to leave the body alone for a bit. When I got back to it, if I tried putting a battery in it, the busy and print button LEDs would light up as soon as the battery was slid in the grip.:confused: Must be some hum dinger of a short in there somewhere. A couple times previously, my LCD would dissolve off.....but turning the camera off then on would reset that.
Being cameraless was just so devastating that I decided to make the emergency purchase on the XTi. I found it a bonus that it was small enough to fit in my laptop bag as well.

Since you're going in December, you may have better luck, but the time I went to Wild Animal Park (can't recall the season, but it was rather hot), very few animals were anywhere to be seen. I'm guessing the heat had something to do with that. No such problem at the zoo, where the animals are kept relatively confined. Just be prepared for a workout, because that place is huge. My favorite by far is Seaworld.

the weather is a huge factor. we recently went to seattle and while up there we went to northwest trek. i also wanted to see mount rainier the same day but it was raining.
we almost turned around but we decided to give northwest trek a try. the weather was perfect for the animals and the diffused lighting was pretty good for photography.

Nice shots Ed. One is always reminded that some of the best and most unusual photography is achieved when everyone else has packed up and gone home.
It's a tough call on which is better. If the animals at the Animal Park were out in abundance, I think it would have provided far better photo-ops than the Zoo. Both parks are huge, and both offer some transportation to get about.
By the way, what lenses were you using at Northwest Trek.

No the 40D is not weather sealed, as many have come to realize. It has seal on the CF and battery door to help keep dust out - that's it. Buttons, etc. are not weather sealed. The 1Ds3 description states it has 76 points of weather sealing, and the 40D has 3. I wouldn't take a 40D to use even in drizzle without an umbrella or bag.

Thereby defeating the purpose of weather sealing....Canon should just say dust sealing.
Incidentally, in all the dusty conditions (before anybody forgets, Australia *IS* home to one of the bigger deserts in the world*) I've shot in, the CF compartment and battery compartment have been the least of my worries on my 5D and 350D. So why is Canon so worried? It doesn't seem like a valid selling point to me.

Ed, As a resident of San Diego, I frequent both and feel the opportunities to shoot in a natural environment are far better at the Animal Park. The key to getting the animals up and around is to get there as early as possible. You want to be there at least at opening time, and there are ways to get in even earlier. One of the most creative of course is to do one of their sleepover camp outs but there are a number of other programs, including "photo safaries" that will both get you in earlier and get you closer by getting you on a safari truck that actually will take you right into and through the exhibit. There are a surprising number of programs available given enough time, and of course money. Enjoy the trip!

Ed, I have the same eyesight problem and let me tell you, the big LCD and menu on the 40D is worth every penny. I upgraded from a 20D which I am keeping as a backup. Oh and I found a new use for Live View.
When you have it on a tripod you can actually see the vibrations that are taking place because it jumps all over the place if you don't have it steady enough.
