It takes the BP 511 series, just like the 20D, 30D, etc...

The grip used on the 300 and 400D will not work, the body size is completely different, you can use the same grip as for the 20D and 30D though. Link below.

With that said there is also a wireless grip which will be available that will allow you to transfer images to your laptop wirelessly. If you want to spend about $900 that is. :D

40D Grip is a totally new re-design... I think the old grips are not going to work on the new body.

I have heard it said that the BG-E2 grip from the 20D and 30D will work on the 40D - though it lacks the new weather sealing (which is not up to the standard of that on 1 series bodies) and the AF-ON button.

Batteries are BP-511 type, the same as the 10D, 20D, 30D and 5D. You can't use XT / XTi batteries.

40D Batteries are the BP511 same as 20D, 30D etc.

There are two new grip options: BG-E2N and the wireless transmitter WFT-E3 which will take 1 battery plus 1 in the body.

I'd infer from the N on the end that the BG-E2N and BG-E2 are interchangeable; or at least the BG-E2 would be forward-compatible. The N will add a degree of weather-sealing between the grip and the battery compartment, which the 40D battery door allows. Whether the N will be backward-compatible remains to be seen. In any event, I think we're less likely to see people buying the N for their older cameras than the E2 for the 40D if they do, in fact, fit.

Since the BG-E2N replaces the BG-E2, it is backward compatible and will work with the 20D and the 30D, too. Canon even says so in the press release for the 40D. But whether the older BG-E2 is forward compatible with the 40D is a different question.
